Punjab Institute of Mental Health is an institute situated in Lahore, Pakistan. It is the largest psychiatric facility in South Asia. History Johann Martin Honigberger was a Hungarian doctor who was the doctor of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Ranjit Singh (13 November 1780 – 27 June 1839), popularly known as Sher-e-Punjab or "Lion of Punjab", was the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, which ruled the northwest Indian subcontinent in the early half of the 19th century. He s ... from 1812 until Maharaja's death in 1839. He set up the first psychiatric ward just behind the gunpowder factory and started treating more patients after the Maharaja's death. He left for Europe when the East India Company annexed Punjab in 1849. Judicial Commissioner Robert Montgomery took control and decided to build a bigger and secluded facility. Johann Martin Honigberger
Johann Martin Honigberger (10 March 1795 – 18 December 1869) was an Imperial Austrian physician and traveller. He travelled through Asia to India and wrote a book on his experiences in the east. A novel based on his life, written by Mircea Eliade in 1940, '' The Secret of Dr. Honigberger'', became popular. Early life Honigberger was born to a Transylvanian Saxon family in Kronstadt which was then part of the Principality of Transylvania. After training in medicine, Honigberger travelled to Constantinople in 1815 and over the following two years he travelled throughout the Levant, Egypt, Arabia and Persia as a government physician. Whilst in Baghdad he learnt of the exploits of four European generals, Jean-François Allard, Paolo Avitabile, Claude Auguste Court and Jean-Baptiste Ventura who had thrived in the service of Maharajah Ranjit Singh. Ranjit Singh (13 November 1780 – 27 June 1839), popularly known as Sher-e-Punjab or "Lion of Punjab", was the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire, which ruled the northwest Indian subcontinent in the early half of the 19th century. He survived smallpox in infancy but lost sight in his left eye. He fought his first battle alongside his father at age 10. After his father died, he fought several wars to expel the Afghans in his teenage years and was proclaimed as the "Maharaja of Punjab" at age 21. His empire grew in the Punjab region under his leadership through 1839. Prior to his rise, the Punjab region had numerous warring misls, misls (confederacies), twelve of which were under Sikh rulers and one Muslim. Robert Montgomery (colonial Administrator)
Sir Robert Montgomery GCSI, KCB (2 December 1809 – 28 December 1887), was a British administrator and civil servant in colonial India. He was Chief Commissioner of Oudh during the period of 1858 to 1859 and later served as Lieutenant Governor of Punjab between 1859 and 1865. Biography Early life Montgomery was born at the family seat at New Park in Moville, a small town in Inishowen in the north of County Donegal in Ulster, Ireland. He was educated at Foyle College, Derry; Wraxall Hall School, Wiltshire; and, from 1823 to 1825, at Addiscombe Military Seminary, Croydon, Surrey.
