Pulu Cocos Museum
Pulu Cocos Museum, also Home Island Visitor Centre & Museum, also Cocos Museum, is a tourism office, visitor centre and museum on Home Island in the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Background The museum was established in 1987, in recognition of the fact that the distinct culture of Home Island needed formal preservation. The site includes the displays on local culture and traditions, as well as the early history of the islands and their ownership by the Clunies-Ross family. The museum also includes displays on military and naval history, as well as local botanical and zoological items. In February 2021 the Shire of Cocos applied for a grant in order to adapt the Tokoh/Old Workshop on Home Island into a new museum and visitor centre. Collections The collection includes objects relating to the Malay communities who were indentured labourers under the Clunies-Ross family. Home Island
Home Island, also known locally as Pulu Selma, is one of only two permanently inhabited islands of the 26 islands of the Southern Atoll of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, an Australian external territory in the central-eastern Indian Ocean. Description It is in area and contains the largest settlement of the territory, Bantam, with a population of about 500 Cocos Malay people. Local attractions include a museum covering local culture and traditions, flora and fauna, Australian naval history, and the early owners of the Cocos-Keeling Islands. The Home Island Mosque is one of the busiest places on the island, and the minaret is painted in territorial flag colours of green and gold. Clunies-Ross Family
The Clunies-Ross family were the original settlers of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, a small archipelago in the Indian Ocean. From 1827 to 1978, the family ruled the previously uninhabited islands as a private fiefdom, initially as ''terra nullius'' and then later under British (1857–1955) and Australian (1955–1978) sovereignty. The head of the family was usually recognised as the resident magistrate, and was sometimes styled as the "King of the Cocos Islands"; a title given by the press. The Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands is a local government area which manages local affairs on the Australian external territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands (; post code: 6799). The island is grouped with Western Australia but is administered by the Department of Infrastructure, Regional Development and Cities and an Administrator. The Shire covers an area of in the Indian Ocean, about north-west of Perth and south-west of Java in Indonesia. Dalang (puppeteer)
The dhalang or dalang ( jv, dhalang; id, dalang) is the puppeteer in an Indonesian ''wayang'' performance. In a performance of ''wayang kulit'', the dalang sits behind a screen (''kelir'') made of white cotton stretched on a wooden frame. Above his head, hanging from beams attached to the top of the screen, is the lamp (''blencong''), which projects the shadows onto the screen. In front of the dhalang is a stage (''debog''), traditionally made from the trunk of a banana tree, into which the sharpened control rods of the puppets can be pushed to keep them in position during the performance. To his left is the puppet chest (''kotak''), and to his right is the puppet chest's lid, on which the puppets sit ready for use.
