Pulp Hero Press is a small publisher active since 2017. The press was founded by Bob McLain. It is primarily a paperback and ebook publisher, initially specializing in non-fiction relating to Robert E. Howard and sword and sorcery before branching into fantasy and pulp adventure fiction. It publishes works by both contemporary authors and classic genre writers of the past. ''Brak the Barbarian'' is a short-fiction collection by American writer John Jakes, featuring his sword and sorcery hero of the same name. Publication history The individual stories titled "Ghosts of Stone" and "The Courts of the Conjuror" originally appeared, in a different form, as "The Pillars of Chambalor" and "The Silk of Shaitan" in the magazine ''Fantastic Stories'' v. 14, no. 3 (March 1965) and no. 4 (April 1965), respectively. The April 1965 issue featured the Brak story in its title illustration. As a novel, ''Brak the Barbarian'' was first published in paperback by Avon Books in July 1968. It was reprinted by Pocket Books in July 1977, by Tower Books in April 1981, and (as a trade paperback) by e-reads.com in 1999. Horseclans is a science fiction series by American writer Robert Adams, set in a North America that had been thrown back to a medieval level by a full-scale nuclear war. Background The books mainly concern the doings of the "Horseclans", a nomadic people originating from the "Sea of Grass"—the Great Plains from present-day southern Canada to central Texas, and from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. The Horseclansmen are portrayed as fierce, noble and often gifted with telepathy, which came in handy for their dealings with their horses and "cats"— sabertoothed tigers that had been revived by scientific means in the years before the nuclear war. John Jakes
John William Jakes (born March 31, 1932) is an American writer, best known for American historical and speculative fiction. His Civil War trilogy, ''North and South'', has sold millions of copies worldwide. He is also the author of The Kent Family Chronicles. He has used the pen name Jay Scotland. Early life and education Jakes was born in Chicago, Illinois. He first sold stories to pulp magazines while still in college in the early 1950s. Jakes studied creative writing at DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana, graduating in 1953. He then earned an M.A. in American literature from Ohio State University. He and Rachel, to whom had been married for 13 months at the time, appeared on the game show ''Beat the Clock'' on August 23, 1952.
