Pullman, Richmond, California
Pullman is a neighborhood in Richmond, California. This area was named after the Pullman Company, founded by prolific industrialist George Mortimer Pullman, who in 1910 built the main facility on the that would someday become this neighborhood. This facility, named The Pullman Shops, served as the main manufacturing and repair facility for the famous Pullman sleeping car ubiquitous throughout the United States for much of the 20th century. During World War II, this facility played an important role in the war effort. The Pullman shop in Richmond was closed on December 31, 1959. Pullman Company
The Pullman Company, founded by George Pullman, was a manufacturer of railroad cars in the mid-to-late 19th century through the first half of the 20th century, during the boom of railroads in the United States. Through rapid late-19th century development of mass production and takeover of rivals, the company developed a virtual monopoly on production and ownership of sleeper cars. During a severe economic downturn, the 1894 Pullman Strike by company workers proved a transforming moment in American labor history. At the company's peak in the early 20th century, its cars accommodated 26 million people a year, and it in effect operated "the largest hotel in the world". George Mortimer Pullman
George Mortimer Pullman (March 3, 1831 – October 19, 1897) was an American engineer and industrialist. He designed and manufactured the Pullman sleeping car and founded a company town, Pullman, for the workers who manufactured it. This ultimately led to the Pullman Strike due to the high rent prices charged for company housing and low wages paid by the Pullman Company. His Pullman Company also hired African-American men to staff the Pullman cars, known as Pullman porters, who provided elite service and were compensated only in tips. Struggling to maintain profitability during an 1894 downturn in manufacturing demand, he halved wages and required workers to spend long hours at the plant, but did not lower prices of rents and goods in his company town. He gained presidential support by Grover Cleveland for the use of federal military troops which left 30 strikers dead in the violent suppression of workers there to end the Pullman Strike of 1894. In the United States, Pullman was used to refer to railroad sleeping cars that were built and operated on most U.S. railroads by the Pullman Company (founded by George Pullman) from 1867 to December 31, 1968. Other uses Pullman also refers to railway dining cars in Europe that were operated by the Pullman Company, or lounge cars operated by the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits. Specifically, in Great Britain, ''Pullman'' refers to the lounge cars operated by the British Pullman Car Company. The nickname ''Pullman coach'' was used in some European cities for the first long (four-axle) electric tramcars whose appearance resembled the Pullman railway cars and that were usually more comfortable than their predecessors. Cutting Boulevard
Cutting Boulevard is a major east–west arterial trunk road in the city of Richmond, California. History It is named after Henry Cutting, the founder of the Port of Richmond. It begins in the historic neighborhood of Point Richmond at the base of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and flows through the South Richmond forming the border with that neighborhood and Marina Bay as does the parallel Interstate 580. The road continues past 23rd street until reaching San Pablo Avenue (State Route 123) the major north–south artery for the West Contra Costa County area, adjacent to the regional transit hub of El Cerrito del Norte BART station, where buses from several counties converge to link with this metro system.
