Pui Chan
Pui Chan (陳培) within martial arts, is the leader of the Wah Lum Pai Martial Arts Organization. He is a sixth generation successor of the Wah Lum Pai Tam Tui Northern Praying Mantis style as well as also being a 33rd generation successor of the Shaolin Temple. He was instrumental in bringing the Wah Lum martial arts style to the United States. Chan is the last living disciple of Lee Kwan Shan, and has since studied under several other masters. Martial arts training Chan began training Wah Lum Pai at the age of six when he was accepted by Lee Kwan Shan. When Lee died, he finished his training under his senior Chan Wan Ching. Chan also trained with numerous grandmasters in China studying kung fu. History Of Martial Arts
Although the earliest evidence of martial arts goes back millennia, the true roots are difficult to reconstruct. Inherent patterns of human aggression which inspire practice of mock combat (in particular wrestling) and optimization of serious close combat as cultural universals are doubtlessly inherited from the pre-human stage and were made into an "art" from the earliest emergence of that concept. Indeed, many universals of martial art are fixed by the specifics of human physiology and not dependent on a specific tradition or era. Specific martial traditions become identifiable in Classical Antiquity, with disciplines such as shuai jiao, Greek wrestling or those described in the Indian epics or the Spring and Autumn Annals of China. Mimi Chan
Mimi Chan (born in Boston, MA) is an American martial arts instructor and performer. Early life Chan moved with her family from Boston, MA to Orlando, FL, in 1980, where her training in martial arts began under her father, Pui Chan. Upon the family's move to Orlando, her father built the Wah Lum Temple, the first traditional Chinese martial arts temple to be built in the United States. By the age of 5, Chan was already performing in local exhibitions. She specialized in Kung Fu, open hand and weaponry. Chan has won Grand Champion Titles and gold medals in multiple international martial arts tournaments, in which she was undefeated. She was also featured in articles in Kung Fu Magazine, and entered the Martial Arts Hall of Fame deemed "Woman of the Year" by Inside Kung Fu Magazine in 1999. ''Black Belt'' is an American magazine covering martial arts and combat sports. The magazine is based in Valencia, California, and is one of the oldest titles dedicated to martial arts in the United States. History and profile The magazine was founded in 1961 by Mitoshi Uyehara. It was published by Uyehara under the company "Black Belt, Inc." based in Los Angeles until 1973. Although the publication went mainstream in 1961, the first magazine was produced and sold for ten cents and was put together on the kitchen floor of Uyehara's home in 1958. By the first year of producing a full publication in 1961, Uyehara was in debt for $30,000. ''Inside Kung-Fu'' was a monthly United States magazine founded in December 1973. Its last issue was in April 2011. History The magazine featured articles on modern wushu and kung fu as well as tournaments and events in the United States and China. The magazine also covered the Filipino martial arts, reality-based self-defense, and martial arts movies. It had annually inducted martial artists into its Hall of Fame.
