Puhtu
Puhtu (also known as Puhtuaid) is a former islet and since the beginning of the 19th century a peninsula in western Estonia. Administratively it belongs to Virtsu small borough in Lääneranna Parish, Pärnu County. Puhtu is covered by a speciose old Temperate broadleaf and mixed forests, broadleaf forest. History Puhtulaid (''Holm Puchten'', ''Holm zum Pucht'') was first mentioned in 1478 when it belonged to the von Uexküll family. The first buildings were erected in the 18th century by the owner of Virtsu, Vana-Virtsu Manor, Carl Thure von Helwig. He designed Puhtu as a private resort with three ''Chinese''-styled houses and alleys surrounded by hewn sculptures. In 1813 Carl Thure von Helwig's widow Wilhelmine von Helwig ordered a memorial stone to a family friend, world-famous German poet Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805). Puhtu-Laelatu Nature Reserve
Puhtu-Laelatu Nature Reserve is a nature reserve situated in western Estonia, in Lääne County. It is located in the territory of Pivarootsi, Rame and Hanila villages and in Virtsu small borough. The nature reserve encompasses parts of Puhtu peninsula and nearby Laelatu wooded meadows. The nature reserve is a species-rich conservation area comprising mainly herb-rich forested areas, coastal meadows and alvars. It is the only known place in Estonia where the orchid Dactylorhiza ruthei grows. Puhtu Biological Station
Puhtu Biological Station is a research station located in Pärnu county Lääneranna Parish, Estonia, at the coast of Baltic Sea. It is one of the oldest biology stations in Estonia. The station is in the Puhtu peninsula, at the territory of Puhtu-Laelatu Nature Reserve, some kilometers from Laelatu Biological Station. It is an important bird area. The main building was built in 1920s and belonged to the biologist Jakob von Uexküll. In 1949, after World War II, it became an official research station. It is known for ornithology research, especially bird ecophysiology and ecology. Virtsu
Virtsu is a small borough (') in Lääneranna Parish, Pärnu County, Estonia. It lies on the western coast of continental Estonia, and is a location of the main port for traffic to and from Saaremaa, the largest island of Estonia. The Virtsu ferry goes to Kuivastu, which is located on the island of Muhu, which is in turn connected to Saaremaa by the largest causeway in Estonia, the Väinatamm. As of the 2011 Census, the settlement's population was 539. Puhtu peninsula, a former island, belongs to Virtsu. Matsalu National Park (previously Matsalu Nature Reserve, et, Matsalu rahvuspark, often just Matsalu) is a nature reserve and national park situated in Lääne and Pärnu Counties, Estonia. Eerik Kumari
Eerik Kumari born Erik Mathias Sits (7 March 1912 – 8 January 1984) was a biologist, and pioneer of ornithology and nature conservation in Estonia. He was born in Kirbla, Lihula Parish. He was a director of the Institute of Zoology and Botany at the Estonian Academy of Sciences during 1952–1977. He was the president of the Estonian Naturalists' Society in 1954–1964.
