Puggy Hunton
John W. "Puggy" Hunton (August 28, 1902 – October 3, 1967) was the final head coach of the Gonzaga University Bulldogs football team, leading their final three seasons, from 1939 to 1941. Prior to his tenure with the Bulldogs he was a high school coach at Gonzaga Preparatory School in Spokane and Cogswell High School of San Francisco. Early life Born in Porum, Oklahoma, Hunton played collegiately at Gonzaga and graduated in June 1927. After he graduated, Hunton served as head coach for the football squad at Cogswell High School of San Francisco prior to accepting the head coaching position at the Gonzaga Preparatory School in 1928. During his ten-year tenure at Gonzaga Prep, he led them to seven city championships and five undefeated seasons en route to an overall record of 74 wins and ten losses (). Porum, Oklahoma
Porum is a town in Muskogee County, Oklahoma, United States. It was named for John Porum Davis, a rancher, Civil War veteran, and Cherokee Nation councilman from the Canadian District in Indian Territory. The community was first known as Porum Gap, which united with another village named Starvilla in 1905. The product of this union became the present town of Porum. 1941 Gonzaga Bulldogs Football Team
The 1941 Gonzaga Bulldogs football team was an American football team that represented Gonzaga University during the 1941 college football season. They played their home games on campus at Gonzaga Stadium in Spokane, Washington. In their third year under head coach Puggy Hunton, the Bulldogs compiled a 3–7 record and were outscored by their opponents by a total of 201 to 65. The season ended with a blowout home loss to Washington State on November 22, two weeks before the Attack on Pearl Harbor. university president Father Leo J. Robinson announced that Gonzaga was suspending its intercollegiate football program for the duration of World War II. Robinson stated the loss of numerous football players and prospect to military service made further competition impossible. The program had been in financial difficulty, and varsity football was not resumed after the war. The 1940 Gonzaga Bulldogs football team was an American football team that represented Gonzaga University during the 1940 college football season. In their second year under head coach Puggy Hunton, the Bulldogs compiled a 5–4–1 record and outscored their opponents by a total of 133 to 79. In their first year under head coach Puggy Hunton, the Bulldogs compiled a 6–2 record, shut out five of their last six opponents, and outscored all opponents by a total of 100 to 45. Among its victories, Gonzaga defeated two Pacific Coast Conference teams, including an undefeated Oregon team that was ranked No. 11 prior to the game.
