Psychrolutes
''Psychrolutes'' is a genus of fish of the family Psychrolutidae (fathead sculpins). Though found predominantly in the deep sea, a handful of species are present in the intertidal regions of the North Pacific rim. In June 2003, During the NORFANZ Expedition north-west of New Zealand, scientists trawled a specimen of ''P. microporos'' at a depth between and on the Norfolk Ridge. Species There are currently 11 recognized species in this genus: * '' Psychrolutes inermis'' ( Vaillant, 1888) * '' Psychrolutes macrocephalus'' ( Gilchrist, 1904) * ''Psychrolutes marcidus'' (McCulloch, 1926) (Blobfish) * '' Psychrolutes marmoratus'' ( T. N. Gill, 1889) * ''Psychrolutes microporos'' ( J. S. Nelson, 1995) * ''Psychrolutes occidentalis'' ( R. Fricke, 1990) (Western Australian sculpin) * '' Psychrolutes paradoxus'' ( Günther, 1861) (Tadpole sculpin) * ''Psychrolutes phrictus'' (Stein Stein is a German, Yiddish and Norwegian word meaning "stone" and "pip" or "kernel". Psychrolutes Microporos
''Psychrolutes microporos'' is a species of deepwater marine fish in the family Psychrolutidae, commonly known as a blobfish or fathead. It is found in the abyssal zone in waters around Australia and New Zealand. Discovery A specimen of ''Psychrolutes microporos'' was trawled by the RV ''James Cook'' and Doctor Ignacio Hernández Ricordi in 1983 and described by Joseph Nelson in 1995. The holotype is in the Museum of New Zealand. Another specimen was collected at a depth of off the coast of New Zealand. Another specimen was collected in 2007 in the Tasman Sea at a depth of . Description ''Psychrolutes microporos'' is a whitish colour and is flattened laterally, with a wide mouth.Blobfish: ''Psychrolutes microporos''

Psychrolutes Phrictus
The blob sculpin (''Psychrolutes phrictus'') is a species of deep-sea fish of the family Psychrolutidae. It feeds mainly on crustaceans, molluscs, and sea pens. It lives off the continental shelves in very deep water (839–2800 m) in the North Pacific Ocean by the coasts of Japan, the Bering Sea, and California. When the female lays eggs the adult fish guard the nest. Description Maximum length is . The head is broad and flattened, the eyes are large and widely separated, and the mouth is curved with fleshy lips. There is no spine in front of the operculum (the bony flap that covers the gills), the branchiostegal membranes are fused to the isthmus (the fleshy projection separating the gill openings), and there are many small cirri (fleshy threads) scattered over the head and body. The operculum is poorly ossified and is covered by a gelatinous layer. Behind the head, the body tapers rapidly to the caudal peduncle and there is a gelatinous layer between the skin and th ...

Psychrolutes Marcidus
: ''Blobfish may also refer to the related species Psychrolutes microporos.'' ''Psychrolutes marcidus'', the smooth-head blobfish, also known simply as blobfish, is a deep-sea fish of the family Psychrolutidae. It inhabits the deep waters off the coasts of mainland Australia and Tasmania, as well as the waters of New Zealand. Blobfish are typically shorter than . They live at depths between , where the pressure is 60 to 120 times greater than that at sea level, which would likely make gas bladders inefficient for maintaining buoyancy. Instead, the flesh of the blobfish is primarily a gelatinous mass with a density slightly less than that of water; this allows the fish to float above the sea floor without expending energy on swimming. The blobfish has a relative lack of muscle, but this is not a disadvantage, as its main food source is edible matter that floats in front of it, such as deep-ocean crustaceans. Blobfish are often caught as bycatch in bottom trawling nets. It ...

Psychrolutidae
The fish family Psychrolutidae (commonly known as blobfishes, toadfishes, flathead sculpins, tadpole sculpins,) contains over 35 recognized species in 8 genera. This family consists of bottom-dwelling marine sculpins shaped like tadpoles, with large heads and bodies that taper back into small, flat tails. The skin is loosely attached and movable, and the layer underneath it is gelatinous. The eyes are placed high on the head, focused forward closer to the tip of the snout. Members of the family generally have large, leaf-like pectoral fins and lack scales, although some species are covered with soft spines. This is important to the species as the depths in which they live are highly pressurized and they are ambush/opportunistic/foraging predators that do not expend energy unless they are forced to. The blobfish has a short, broad tongue and conical teeth that are slightly recurved and are arranged in bands in irregular rows along the premaxillaries; canines are completely absent. ...
