''The Parson's Widow'' ( sv, Prästänkan), aka ''The Witch Woman'', is a 1920 Swedish comedy drama film directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer. The film is based on a story ''Prestekonen'' by Kristofer Janson. Plot Söfren, a recent seminary graduate, and his fiancee Mari make their way on foot through a Norwegian forest to a village where a church is in need of a pastor. Mari's father won't allow her to marry until Söfren obtains a full-time church assignment. Söfren learns that he is competing with two other men who are affluent scholars from Copenhagen. The three men wait outside the church until the verger calls them in, one by one, to deliver their trial sermons. The first candidate delivers a sermon on the creation story that promptly puts the entire congregation to sleep. The second candidate is summoned and announces that his sermon topic is "Balaam's ass and God's strange power by which He was able to open the jaws of a dumb animal so that it might speak like a man!" Einar Rød
Harald Einar Rød (April 5, 1897 – July 21, 1931) was a Norwegian actor. Rød made his theater debut in 1915. Starting in 1924, Rød was at the National Theater in Oslo, where he played major roles in plays such as ''Outward Bound'' (Norwegian title: ''Til fremmed havn'') by Sutton Vane and '' Maria Stuart'' by Friedrich Schiller. He also appeared in some Swedish silent films and showed great talent for the medium, among other things in the role of the new priest in '' Prästänkan'' by Carl Theodor Dreyer (1920). Einar Rød was married to the Swedish actress Mary Johnson, and among other productions they both starred in the German film '' Die Stimme des Herzens'', directed by Hanns Schwarz. Carl Theodor Dreyer
Carl Theodor Dreyer (; 3 February 1889 – 20 March 1968), commonly known as Carl Th. Dreyer, was a Danish film director and screenwriter. Widely considered one of the greatest filmmakers of all time, his movies are noted for their emotional austerity and slow, stately pacing, frequent themes of social intolerance, the inseparability of fate and death, and the power of evil in earthly life. His 1928 movie ''The Passion of Joan of Arc'' is considered to be one of the greatest movies of all time, renowned for its cinematography and use of close-ups. It frequently appears on Sight & Sound's lists of the greatest films ever made, and in 2012's poll it was voted the 9th-best film ever made by film critics and 37th by film directors.
