Providence University
Providence University (PU; ) is a Catholic co-educational institution in Shalu District, Taichung City, Taiwan. Providence University is one of the U12 Consortium member schools, and is one of two Taiwan universities participating in the ISEP network. History Providence University was founded by an American congregation, the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods (Indiana, United States). In the summer of 1919, Bishop Joseph Tacconi of Kaifeng, Henan Province, Republic of China, met with Sisters of Providence general superior Mother Mary Cleophas Foley to request sisters for a school for young women in Kaifeng. In 1921 Mother Marie Gratia Luking (1885–1964) and five other Sisters of Providence founded the Hua-Mei Girls' Elementary and High Schools there, one of the first schools for girls in China. Shalu District
Shalu District (; lit: Sand Deer) is a suburban district in central Taichung City, Taiwan. History Originally a settlement of the Papora people, this region was named . During the Kingdom of Tungning (1662－1683), the Taiwanese Plains Aborigines were driven away or sinicized, and the area became a Han settlement. In 1731 during Qing rule, Tamsui Subprefecture () extended from the Tai-kah River northward up to ''Kelang'' (; Keelung). In 1920, during Japanese rule, the written name was changed to Sharoku (). Administratively, Sharoku was under , Taichū Prefecture. In Taiwanese Hokkien, the old name () is still used. In 1945 the village was changed to a township, and was upgraded to a district in 2010. Mary Cleophas Foley
Mother Mary Cleophas Foley, S.P., (February 18, 1845 – 1928) was the Superior General of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana from 1890 to 1926. During her time in office, she completed the building of the Church of the Immaculate Conception (Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana) and built numerous other buildings at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana, including a new Providence Convent, the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, and an infirmary. Foley inaugurated Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in 1909 and served as president of the college from 1890 to 1926. She introduced the cause for canonization for Mother Theodore Guerin, the foundress of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, who was canonized a saint of the Roman Catholic Church in 2006. Taichung TRA Station
Taichung station () is a railway station in Taichung, Taiwan served by Taiwan Railways Administration. It is served by all TRA services along the route. History The station was originally constructed in 1905 in a wooden building architectural style and started its operation in 1908. In 1917, it was rebuilt as a red brick structure with Renaissance architectural style. On 16 October 2016, the elevated station was inaugurated in which the ground-level station was shut down. The first train that arrived at the elevated station was at 06:28. National Freeway 3 (), also known as Formosa Freeway (), is a freeway in Taiwan. It is the second north–south freeway in Taiwan, beginning in Keelung City at Jijin Interchange on the provincial highway 2 (Jijin Road) and ending in Linbian, Pingtung on the provincial highway 17. The Chinese Civil War was fought between the Kuomintang-led government of the Republic of China and forces of the Chinese Communist Party, continuing intermittently since 1 August 1927 until 7 December 1949 with a Communist victory on mainland China.
