Providence Gold Bugs
The Providence Clamdiggers was a member of the American Soccer League. They were renamed the Providence Gold Bugs before the spring half of the 1928–1929 season. The club won the American Soccer Association Cup in 1929. After the fall 1930 season, the club was bought and became the Fall River F.C. American Soccer Association Cup
The American Soccer Association Cup was an open cup-tie competition that took place in 1929. The entires for this tournament were the ASL teams and amateur clubs from the Southern New York State Association. The amateur clubs played the early rounds to earn the right to play off against the ASL entrants in the final stages."Cup Pairings Are Announced". (February 19, 1929). ''Chester Times'', p.13 col.2 The tournament ran from February to May. The sixth round which constituted the tournament proper included the seven ASL teams and the only amateur side to qualify, the Brooklyn Celtics. The final was played over two legs with Providence gaining the title over the New York Nationals with a 4-2 win on May 20 after the teams drew 2-2 on May 18. A May 19 game was played but officials called the game on account of weather and continued as an exhibition match with the teams playing to a 4-4 draw. Sam Fletcher (soccer)
Sam Fletcher (1890 – 22 January 1972) was an English footballer who played as a full back in England, Canada and the United States. He later coached the Brown University soccer team. Player Fletcher began his career in England, playing in the Manchester and District League. The League was experiencing difficulties which led to its suspending operations in 1912. Before that happened, Fletcher left England and emigrated to Canada in 1910. He settled in Hamilton, Ontario where he played for several teams including the Independent Labour Party Team and Hamilton Lancashire. At some point, he moved to the Niagara Falls Rangers which went to the semifinals of the 1914 National Challenge Cup. In October 1914, he signed with Bethlehem Steel, a powerhouse team playing in the Allied American Foot Ball League. He remained with Bethlehem for seven seasons.
