Newburyport, Massachusetts
Newburyport is a coastal city in Essex County, Massachusetts, United States, northeast of Boston. The population was 18,289 at the 2020 census. Builder's Old Measurement (BOM, bm, OM, and o.m.) is the method used in England from approximately 1650 to 1849 for calculating the cargo capacity of a ship. It is a volumetric measurement of cubic capacity. It estimated the tonnage of a ship based on length and maximum beam (nautical), beam. It is expressed in "tons burden" ( en-em , burthen , enm , byrthen ), and abbreviated "tons bm". The formula is: : \text = \frac where: * ''Length'' is the length, in foot (length), feet, from the stem (ship), stem to the sternpost; * ''Beam (nautical), Beam'' is the maximum beam, in feet. Swan River Colony
The Swan River Colony, also known as the Swan River Settlement, or just Swan River, was a British colony established in 1829 on the Swan River, in Western Australia. This initial settlement place on the Swan River was soon named Perth, and it became the capital city of Western Australia. The name was a ''pars pro toto'' for Western Australia. Protector (fireboat)
The City of Long Beach, California started to operate a new fireboat, now known as the ''Protector'', in May 2014. The vessel was known as ''Fireboat 20'', until she was officially commissioned, on June 8, 2016. A sister ship will follow within a year. The two new vessels will replace the ''Challenger'' and the ''Liberty'', commissioned in 1987. The earlier vessels had a troubled maintenance record. She will be one of the most powerful fireboats in the world. ''Protector'' is propelled by a pair of Voith-Schneider propellers, an advanced propulsion system that bears some resemblance to helicopter propulsion, and enable instantaneous changes in the propeller thrust. ''Protector'' is a "Firestorm 30" fireboat in Victoria, British Columbia, purchased in 2007. Design and construction The fireboat was built by Metalcraft Marine. Her crew of three can operate all her firefighting equipment from within her sealed cabin. She is equipped with a single cot where an injured individual can receive emergency medical care. Her water cannons can project 2300 gallons. Twin diesels engines can propel her at 44 mph. One of her two water cannon can be dismounted, which would be useful for fighting a fire, on land, if an earthquake, or terrorist attack, had knocked out the city's fire mains. Operational history On July 29, 2013, the ''Protector''s crew provided first aid to a woman and her rescuers, after passersby plucked her from Victoria's Gorge waterway.
