Lake Rwihinda
Lake Rwihinda (french: Lac Rwihinda, ), also known as the ''Lac aux Oiseaux'' (Bird Lake) is a lake in the Kirundo Province of Burundi. It is home to diverse migratory birds, which are the main tourist attraction in the region. However, despite being protected, it is under threat from encroaching agriculture in this very poor region. Location Lake Rwihinda is in the Commune of Kirundo, to the north of the provincial capital of Kirundo. It covers and is above sea level. Mutawenzi and the Mutawenzi Military Camp are just south of the lake. The Kirundo Airport and the settlement of Rutare are to the northeast. A marshy strip leads northwest to the Akanyaru River. Lake Narungazi and Lake Gitamo also drain into this marshy strip. If the cyperus papyrus swamp in the Nyavyamo valley downstream of the lake were drained, the lake would empty out into the Akanyaru River. Ecology Lake Rwihinda is important for its aquatic biodiversity, and also for the local economy. The birds of Lake ...

Lake Rweru Natural Reserve
A lake is an area filled with water, localized in a basin, surrounded by land, and distinct from any river or other outlet that serves to feed or drain the lake. Lakes lie on land and are not part of the ocean, although, like the much larger oceans, they do form part of the Earth's water cycle. Lakes are distinct from lagoons, which are generally coastal parts of the ocean. Lakes are typically larger and deeper than ponds, which also lie on land, though there are no official or scientific definitions. Lakes can be contrasted with rivers or streams, which usually flow in a channel on land. Most lakes are fed and drained by rivers and streams. Natural lakes are generally found in mountainous areas, rift zones, and areas with ongoing glaciation. Other lakes are found in endorheic basins or along the courses of mature rivers, where a river channel has widened into a basin. Some parts of the world have many lakes formed by the chaotic drainage patterns left over from the ...

World Food Day
World Food Day is an international day celebrated every year worldwide on October 16 to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. The day is celebrated widely by many other organizations concerned with hunger and food security, including the World Food Programme, the World Health Organization and the International Fund for Agricultural Development. WFP received the Nobel Prize in Peace for 2020 for their efforts to combat hunger, contribute to peace in conflict areas, and for playing a leading role in stopping the use of hunger in the form of a weapon for war and conflict. The World Food Day theme for 2014 was Family Farming: "Feeding the world, caring for the earth"; in 2015 it was "Social Protection and Agriculture: Breaking the Cycle of Rural Poverty"; in 2016 it is Climate Change: "Climate is changing. Food and agriculture must too", which echoes the theme of 2008, and of 2002 and 1989 before that. The theme of 2020 ...

Ruduhira Marsh
Ruduhira Marsh (french: Marais de Ruduhira; ) is a marsh in the northeast of Kirundo Province, Burundi. Location Before being cut in half by a road, the Nyamabuno Marsh was more than wide and over long. In 2005 a road about was being built from Karambo in Kirundo Province to Ruzo, Muyinga Province through the Ruduhira marsh. The road cuts the marsh in two. The right part retains the Nyamabuno name, while the left part is called Ruduhira Marsh. The Nyamabuno and Ruduhira marshes drain the waters of Lake Rweru in the Vumasi, Rusenyi, Karambo and Nonwe watersheds. Exploitation By 2005 the start of agricultural clearing of these two marshes for rice cropping could be seen of both sides of the road. The road had caused water levels to drop, letting the local population start cultivating rice in the marsh. The road will cause progressive drying of the marshes and lowering of the lake levels. The administrator of the Bwambarangwe commune said in 2005 that an Agricultural Rehabi ...
