''Propimelodus'' is a genus of South American catfish of the family Pimelodidae. Taxonomy The type species of this genus, ''P. eigenmanni'', was first described in 1946 under the genus ''Pimelodus''. In 2002, the genus ''Propimelodus'' was described for this species. Shortly after, in 2006, the species ''P. caesius'' was described to this genus and in 2007 another new species, ''P. araguayae'' was described. Other species will be described in the future. ''Propimelodus'' is classified under the "'' Calophysus-Pimelodus'' clade". Within this clade, it is considered a part of the "Pimelodus-group" of Pimelodids, which also includes ''Pimelodus'', '' Exallodontus'', '' Duopalatinus'', '' Cheirocerus'', '' Iheringichthys'', '' Bergiaria'', '' Bagropsis'', '' Parapimelodus'', '' Platysilurus'', and '' Platystomatichthys''. ''Parapimelodus'' is a small genus of long-whiskered catfishes native to South America. Species There are currently two recognized species in this genus: * '' Parapimelodus nigribarbis'' ( Boulenger, 1889) * '' Parapimelodus valenciennis'' ( Lütken, 1874) Distribution The two species of ''Parapimelodus'' are isolated from each other. ''P. valenciennis'' is known from the Uruguay, La Plata, Paraguay, and the lower to middle Paraná Rivers. ''P. nigribarbis'' is restricted to the Lagoa dos Patos system. Description The body is compressed and becomes strongly compressed at the tail. The head is slightly depressed and the mouth is slightly inferior, with the upper jaw longer than the lower jaw. There is one pair of maxillary barbels and two mental. The dorsal and pectoral fin spines are strong and pungent. Jari River
The Jari River, or Jary River ( pt, Rio Jari), is a northern tributary of the Amazon River on the border between the states of Pará and Amapá in northeastern Brazil. It is in the most downstream regions of the Amazon Basin and borders the Guiana Highlands and the Guianas to the northwest. Course The river flows through the Uatuma-Trombetas moist forests ecoregion. The source of the Jari is in the south of the Tumuk Humak Mountains, and its mouth is at the Amazon River between the municipalities of Almeirim in Pará and Vitória do Jari in Amapá. Ilha Grande de Gurupá, the second-largest island of the Amazon River Delta, is opposite of the mouth of the Jari River. Part of the river's basin is in the Maicuru Biological Reserve. Trombetas
The Trombetas is a large river on the northern side of the Amazon River. Course The Trombetas is long, and is navigable by 500 ton vessels for a stretch of . The Trombetas river gives birth to very many rivers, including the Anamu river. It is formed by the junction of the Poana and Anuma rivers on the border between Brazil and Guyana. Where it meets the Paraná de Sapucuá it takes the name of lower Trombetas, and reaches up to in width, with the stream divided by several long and narrow islands. It runs through the municipalities of Oriximiná, Terra Santa, Óbidos and Faro. The river basin has an area of about , with an intricate pattern of tributaries including the Poana, Anamu, Turuna, Inhabu, Mapuera and Paru de Oeste. Amazon River
