''Property Is No Longer a Theft'' ( it, La proprietà non è più un furto) is a 1973 comedy film directed by Elio Petri. It was entered into the 23rd Berlin International Film Festival. Plot Total, a young bank cashier, sees his life, with its grey, dismal prospects, as disappointing. He envies the wealth of many of his clients, often accumulated though criminal or corrupt activities. After surviving an armed robbery, he decides to start a new life, as a thief. Resigning from his job, he begins discreetly with small robberies in supermarkets, progressing to larger frauds, including of a former client, a butcher. He enjoys the new clothes, new cars and new women but his neuroticism and social conscience pose problems. Eraclio Petri (29 January 1929 – 10 November 1982), commonly known as Elio Petri, was an Italian film director, screenwriter, theatre director, and critic associated with the political cinema in the 1960s and '70s. His film ''Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion'' won the 1971 Oscar for Best Foreign-Language Film, and his film ''The Working Class Goes to Heaven'' won the Palme d'Or at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival. Orazio Orlando (14 June 1933 – 18 December 1990) was an Italian film, stage and television actor. Life and career Born in Naples, Orlando attended the Academy of Dramatic Arts in Rome for two seasons, in 1953-54 and in 1954-55, without graduating. He made his debut at 18, with the stage company of Renzo Ricci, along with Giorgio Albertazzi and Anna Proclemer. His first important participation was in Shakespeare's ''King Lear'', in 1955.
