Progressive Union For Renewal
The Progressive Union for Renewal (french: Union progressiste pour le renouveau, UPR), formerly called Progressive Union, is a political party in Benin, led by Bruno Amoussou. It tends to be more popular in the south of the country. In the 2019 Beninese parliamentary election, the party came first, winning 47 of 83 seats in the National Assembly (Benin), National Assembly. Both the Progressive Union and the only other party in the National Assembly, Republican Bloc, are allied with President Patrice Talon. The current Vice President of Benin, Mariam Chabi Talata, is a member. In July 2022, Bruno Amoussou retired and left the presidency of the UP to Joseph Djogbenou. In August 2022, the party merged with the Democratic Renewal Party (Benin), Democratic Renewal Party and changed to its present name. Joseph Fifamè Djogbénou (born 20 March 1969), is a Beninese politician, lawyer and academic who is the current President of the Progressive Union for Renewal party. Djogbénou was the President of the Constitutional Court of Benin The Constitutional Court is the highest authority in Benin on matters of constitutionality. 2020 Beninese Municipal Elections
Municipal elections were held in Benin on 17 May 2020 to elect all councillors in every municipality and commune. The elections took place despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Background The election came only a year after the highly controversial 2019 Beninese parliamentary election, 2019 parliamentary election which had seen new electoral laws and financial requirements prevent opposition parties running and saw the two parties aligned with President Patrice Talon, Progressive Union (Benin), Progressive Union and Republican Bloc, secure the National Assembly. These same constraints also severely suppressed opposition parties for the 2020 local election. The African Court of Human and Peoples' Rights even called for the election to be postponed but the Beninese authorities went ahead. 2023 Beninese Parliamentary Election
Parliamentary elections were held in Benin on 8 January 2023 to elect all 109 members of the National Assembly. The preliminary results of the election were announced on 11 January. Background The 2016 presidential election was won by Patrice Talon, with the country then widely seen as an example of democracy on the African continent. However, the 2019 parliamentary elections led to a major crisis. Only two parties, both of which supported Talon, were allowed to compete (the Progressive Union and the Republican Bloc), with opposition lists failing validation after the implementation of a more restrictive electoral code by the government. The opposition, civil society and NGOs such as Amnesty International denounced what they considered to be an authoritarian drift by the government, damaging the country's democratic reputation.
