Professor Of Divinity At Glasgow
Professor of Divinity is an academic position at the University of Glasgow. Although divinity was taught from the foundations of the University in 1451, it was in 1577, as part of James VI's ''Nova Erectio'', that a Chair was established, to be held by the Principal of the University of Glasgow. The last Principal to hold the Chair of Divinity was Herbert Story, from 1898 to 1907. In 1640, a second Chair of Divinity was established, with the holder considered ''the'' Professor of Divinity. Note, there is also a Professor of Divinity and Biblical Criticism. Stevenson McGill
Stevenson McGill (1765-1840) was a Scottish minister of the Church of Scotland who served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1828. He was an author and was elected to be a professor of divinity at Glasgow University. Early life and education Stevenson was born in Port Glasgow on 19 January 1765 the son of Thomas Macgill, a shipbuilder on the River Clyde. His mother, Frances Welsh, daughter of George Welsh, esq., of Lochharet in East Lothian, may have been a descendant of the John Welch, son-in-law of John Knox. Macgill was educated in the parish school at Port Glasgow and Glasgow University, which he entered at the age of ten and took the nine years' course, gaining many distinctions in classics and theology. George Pattison
George Pattison (born 1950) is a retired English theologian and Anglican priest. His last post prior to retirement was as Professor of Divinity at the University of Glasgow. He was previously Lady Margaret Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford. From 2017-2019 he was a Senior Co-Fund Fellow at the Max Weber Center at the University of Erfurt. Werner Günter Adolf Jeanrond was Professor of Systematic Theology with special responsibility for Dogmatics at the University of Oslo. He is retired. Background Jeanrond is a German Roman Catholic theologian. He was born in 1955 in Saarbrücken in the Saar Protectorate, now Saarland, Germany. George Newlands
George McLeod Newlands is a Scottish theologian widely published in the fields of modern systematic theology, Christology, emancipatory theology, and the history of Christian thought. He is Emeritus Professor of Divinity at the University of Glasgow, and served as Chair of the Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies panel of the UK's 2008 Research Assessment Exercise and as President of the Society for the Study of Theology for 2013–14. William Hastie
William Hastie MA DD (7 July 1842 – 31 August 1903) was a Scottish clergyman and theologian. He produced the first English translation of the '' Universal Natural History and Theory of Heaven'', by Immanuel Kant. Hastie led the General Assembly's Institution in Calcutta, where he was credited with developing the Hindu advocate Swami Vivekananda. William Purdie Dickson
William Purdie Dickson DD LLD (1823–1901) was a Scottish minister and theologian. He was Professor of Divinity at the University of Glasgow from 1873 to 1895. The William Dickson Prize is named in his honour. Early life William Purdie Dickson was born 22 October 1823 in Pettinain, Lanarkshire, Scotland, the son of Rev George Dickson, the minister of Kilrenny in Fife. The younger Dickson attended Lanark School and St. Andrews University. He was lincensed to preach as a Church of Scotland minister by the Presbytery of Linlithgow in 1845. John Caird (theologian)
John Caird DD LLD (1820–1898) was a Scottish theologian. He entered the Church of Scotland, of which he became one of the most eloquent preachers. He served as the Principal of the University of Glasgow from 1873 until 1898. Alexander Hill (minister)
Alexander Hill (1785–1867) was a Scottish minister of the Church of Scotland who served as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1845. He was professor of divinity at the University of Glasgow. Life Hill was born in St Andrews, Fife on 19 July 1785, one of eleven children of Harriet Scott and Rev George Hill, Principal of the University of St Andrews. Robert Trail (moderator)
Robert Trail DD (1720–1775) was an 18th century Scottish minister who served as Professor of both Oriental Languages and Divinity at Glasgow University and as Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland in 1762.
