Pro Memoria Medal
The Pro Memoria Medal is a Polish civil state decoration awarded by the head of the Office for War Veterans and Victims of Oppression. Established 25 January 2005, the medal is awarded for outstanding contributions in perpetuating the memory of the people and deeds in the struggle for Polish independence during World War II. Description The medal is disc shaped made of silver colored metal. The obverse of the medal shows the Polish Eagle sitting on a sword crossed with barbed wire. In the background is a breached fence. On the reverse around the rim is the inscription ''URZĄD DO SPRAW KOMBATANTÓW I OSÓB REPRESJONOWANYCH (Office for War Veterans and Victims of Oppression)''. In the center is the inscription ''PRO MEMORIA'' over crossed oak and laurel branches, and the date: ''8 MAJA 2005'', the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. Bjørn Egge
Bjørn Egge CBE (19 August 1918 – 25 July 2007) was a Major General of the Norwegian Army and President of the Norwegian Red Cross (1981–1987). He served as deputy head of the NATO Defence College (1976–1980). Egge was a soldier during the German attack on Norway in 1940. He participated in the break out by Norwegian merchant vessels from Gothenburg in March 1942, the vessel he was on board was sunk and he was captured by the Germans. He spent three years in concentration camps. He was arrested on 1 April 1942, and sat in ''Marlag und Milag Nord'' until being transferred to Rendsburg in early 1943. He went on to Sonnenburg in June 1943, then Sachsenhausen in November 1944. He returned to Norway in May 1945. After the war Egge entered officers training and served in the Norwegian army in various positions. Gunnar Sønsteby
Gunnar Fridtjof Thurmann Sønsteby DSO ( 1918 – 10 May 2012) was a member of the Norwegian resistance movement during the German occupation of Norway in World War II. Known by the nickname "Kjakan" ("The Chin") and as "Agent No. 24", he was the most highly decorated citizen in Norway, including being the only person to have been awarded the War Cross with three swords, Norway's highest military decoration. His additional recognitions include the following: * In 1945, Sønsteby was awarded the British Distinguished Service Order and the U.S. Medal of Freedom with Silver Palm. * In 2001 he was awarded the American-Scandinavian Foundation's culture award. * On 13 May 2007, a statue of him was erected on Solli plass in Oslo. Teresa Klimek
Teresa Klimek (1929-2013) was a Polish people, Polish educator and activist. Educated to teach mathematics, she taught in various schools in Gorzów Wielkopolski from 1953 to 1984 and was honored for her skill as an educator. She helped found the Gorzów Wielkopolski branch of the Catholic Intellectuals Club as well as the regional branch of Solidarity (Polish trade union), Solidarity. Her activism during People's Republic of Poland, Poland's struggle for democracy was widely recognized at both the local and national level and she was honored with numerous medals and awards. Andrzej Karweta
Andrzej Karweta (11 June 1958 – 10 April 2010) was rear admiral (NATO code OF-7) of the Polish Navy and its commander-in-chief from November 2007 until his death in April 2010 in the Smolensk air crash. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of admiral (NATO code OF-9). Biography Andrzej Karweta was born in Jeleń village (part of Jaworzno since 1977). Wojciech Jaruzelski
Wojciech Witold Jaruzelski (; 6 July 1923 – 25 May 2014) was a Polish military officer, politician and ''de facto'' leader of the Polish People's Republic from 1981 until 1989. He was the First Secretary of the Polish United Workers' Party between 1981 and 1989, making him the last leader of the Polish People's Republic. Jaruzelski served as Prime Minister from 1981 to 1985, the Chairman of the Council of State from 1985 to 1989 and briefly as President of Poland from 1989 to 1990, when the office of President was restored after 37 years. He was also the last commander-in-chief of the Polish People's Army, which in 1990 became the Polish Armed Forces. Franciszek Gągor (8 September 1951 – 10 April 2010) was a Polish general, Chief of the General Staff of the Polish Armed Forces between 2006 and 2010. Major General Karol John Drewienkiewicz is a retired British Army officer, generally known as "DZ". Early life and education Drewienkiewicz attended Stamford School, an independent boarding school in southern Lincolnshire, alongside Mike Jackson, with whom he later served in Kosovo and who went on to become the professional head of the British Army. Army career Drewienkiewicz was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1966 and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant in 1968, captain in 1972, major in 1978, lieutenant colonel in 1984 and colonel in 1988.
