Priyani Puketapu (born 27 December 1990) is a New Zealand journalist, model and beauty pageant titleholder who was crowned Miss Universe New Zealand 2011, representing Wellington. There was subsequently controversy, with claims that some of the judges had been pressured to select a blonde. She represented New Zealand at the Miss Universe 2011 pageant in Brazil. Puketapu had previously competed for the Miss Universe New Zealand title in 2009 where she was placed first runner-up. Deshamanya Priyani Elizabeth Soysa ( si, ප්‍රියානි සොයිසා; 23 November 1925 – 7 April 2023) was a Sri Lankan scientist who was Emeritus Professor of Paediatrics of the University of Colombo and the first woman to be appointed to a professorial chair in Sri Lanka. Early life and education Soysa was born on 23 November 1925. After completing her studies in Princess of Wales College, Moratuwa, she entered the Faculty of Medicine, University of Colombo where she graduated with First Class Honours in the final MBBS exam. Thereafter, she proceeded to the United Kingdom to pursue her specialist studies in Paediatrics. Priyani Wijesekera also spelt as either Priyani Wijesekara or Priyanee Wijesekera is a Sri Lankan lawyer, former Secretary General of Parliament who also served as a former ambassador of Sri Lanka to Austria. She is regarded as one of the prolific prominent figures of women participation in the Parliament of Sri Lanka. Career She pursued her career in law and became the first Sri Lankan woman to be elected as the Secretary-General of the Parliament of Sri Lanka. After succeeding as an SG, she took steps and initiatives to increase the women participation in politics by increasing the number of women members in the parliament.
