The Prix Iris for Most Successful Film Outside Quebec (french: Prix Iris du film s'étant le plus illustré à l'extérieur du Québec) is an annual film award presented by Québec Cinéma as part of the Prix Iris awards program, to honour films made within the Cinema of Quebec which have had significant success beyond the province, both in English Canada and internationally. Maelström (film)
''Maelström'' is a 2000 Canadian psychological drama film written and directed by Denis Villeneuve. It stars Marie-Josée Croze as a depressed young businesswoman who becomes romantically involved with the son of a man she killed in a hit-and-run accident. Employing fantasy and comedic elements, ''Maelström'' is narrated by a talking fish. Villeneuve conceived of the story, basing it on his interest in car accidents and modelling the protagonist after various women he knew. He cast Croze, then a novice actress, in the lead role. Filming took place in Montreal in 1999, with animatronics to depict the fish narrator. Jean-Marc Vallée
Jean-Marc Vallée (March 9, 1963December 25, 2021) was a Canadian filmmaker, film editor, and screenwriter. After studying film at the Université de Montréal, Vallée went on to make a number of critically acclaimed short films, including ''Stéréotypes'' (1991), ''Les Fleurs magiques'' (1995), and ''Les Mots magiques'' (1998). His debut feature, ''Black List'' (1995), was nominated for nine Genie Awards, including nods for Vallée's direction and editing. His fourth feature film, '' C.R.A.Z.Y.'' (2005), received further critical acclaim and was a financial success. He was such a perfectionist, and budgets were so tight, the film took almost ten years to make. ''The Barbarian Invasions'' (french: Les Invasions barbares) is a 2003 Canadian-French sex comedy-drama film written and directed by Denys Arcand and starring Rémy Girard, Stéphane Rousseau and Marie-Josée Croze. The film is a sequel to Arcand's 1986 film ''The Decline of the American Empire'', continuing the story of the character Rémy, a womanizing history professor now terminally ill with cancer. The sequel was a result of Arcand's longtime desire to make a film about a character close to death, also incorporating a response to the September 11 attacks of 2001.
