''Privateers and Gentlemen'' is a role-playing game by author Walter Jon Williams, published by Fantasy Games Unlimited in 1983. Williams based this game on his own historical nautical adventure novels set in the late 18th century "Age of Fighting Sail", and he also incorporated his previously published miniatures game ''Heart of Oak'' with a new role-playing system where the player characters are naval officers. The game received positive reviews in game periodicals including '' Dragon'', ''White Dwarf'', and ''Different Worlds''. Description ''Privateers and Gentlemen'' is a historical naval game system set in the late 18th century during the days of Admiral Horatio Nelson and C.S. Privateers And Gentlemen, Role-playing Game
A privateer is a private person or ship that engages in maritime warfare under a commission of war. Since robbery under arms was a common aspect of seaborne trade, until the early 19th century all merchant ships carried arms. A sovereign or delegated authority issued commissions, also referred to as a letter of marque, during wartime. The commission empowered the holder to carry on all forms of hostility permissible at sea by the usages of war. This included attacking foreign vessels and taking them as prizes, and taking prize crews as prisoners for exchange. Captured ships were subject to condemnation and sale under prize (law), prize law, with the proceeds divided by percentage between the privateer's sponsors, shipowners, captains and crew. A percentage share usually went to the issuer of the commission (i.e. the sovereign). TSR (company)
TSR, Inc. was an American game publishing company, best known as the original publisher of ''Dungeons & Dragons'' (''D&D''). Its earliest incarnation, Tactical Studies Rules, was founded in October 1973 by Gary Gygax and Don Kaye. Gygax had been unable to find a publisher for ''D&D'', a new type of game he and Dave Arneson were co-developing, so founded the new company with Kaye to self-publish their products. Needing financing to bring their new game to market, Gygax and Kaye brought in Brian Blume in December as an equal partner.
