Printed Matter, Inc
Printed Matter, Inc. is an independent 501(c)(3) non-profit grant-supported bookstore, artist organization, and arts space which publishes and distributes artists' books. It is currently located at 231 11th Avenue in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York City. History and mission Printed Matter, Inc. was founded by a loose consortium of artists, critics, and publishers—including Sol LeWitt, Lucy Lippard, Carol Androcchio, Amy Baker (Sandback), Edit DeAk, Mike Glier, Nancy Linn, Walter Robinson, Ingrid Sischy, Pat Steir, Mimi Wheeler, Robin White and Irena von Zahn—in 1976 as a for-profit art space in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City. Edit DeAk (; formerly deAk; ; September 16, 1948 – June 9, 2017) was a Hungarian-born American art critic and writer, co-founder of the journal '' Art-Rite'' and the non-profit bookstore and artist book distributor, Printed Matter, Inc. Early life and education DeAk was born Edit Deak in Budapest, Hungary, to Elvira (née Csutkai) and Béla Deak. In 1968, DeAk escaped Communist Hungary in the trunk of a car into Yugoslavia. She and her husband, Peter Grosz, eventually came to New York City via Italy. In 1972, DeAk received a B.A. in Art History from Columbia University. Career After taking an art criticism class taught by Brian O'Doherty, DeAk, and two fellow Columbia students— Walter Robinson and Joshua Cohn—were invited to write for the publication '' Art in America,'' where O'Doherty was an editor. Jordan Nassar
Jordan Nassar (born 1985) is an American artist based in New York City. He primarily works with textiles, especially in creating works based on traditional Palestinian embroidery. Nassar also creates self-published artist's books and zines. Early life Nassar was born in 1985 in New York City's Upper West Side, where he also grew up. He is the son of a Polish mother and of a U.S.-born Palestinian doctor who performs humanitarian work in Palestine. His father's father, a Jordanian Palestinian, came to the United States as a teenager. Career Nassar bases his work on '' tatreez'' (Palestinian cross-stitch embroidery) which is typically created in panels which are stitched together into clothing or other items. Hammer Museum
The Hammer Museum, which is affiliated with the University of California, Los Angeles, is an art museum and cultural center known for its artist-centric and progressive array of exhibitions and public programs. Founded in 1990 by the entrepreneur-industrialist Armand Hammer to house his personal art collection, the museum has since expanded its scope to become "the hippest and most culturally relevant institution in town." NY Art Book Fair
The NY Art Book Fair is Printed Matter, Inc's annual event, historically held in September or October. The NY Art Book Fair is the world’s largest book fair for artists’ books and related publications, featuring over 370 exhibitors from 30 countries, and attended by over 39,000 visitors annually. Originally free, the now ticketed fair presents an active program of exhibitions, talks, workshops, book launches and performances, as well as many off-schedule events hosted by individual publishers. The NY Art Book Fair was created under the direction of AA Bronson, a New York artist and former President of Printed Matter, Inc. (2004-2010). AA Bronson
AA Bronson (born Michael Tims in Vancouver in 1946) is an artist. He was a founding member of the artists' group General Idea, was president and director of Printed Matter, Inc., and started the NY Art Book Fair and the LA Art Book Fair. Early life Tims' father was an Air Force officer, and as a result, the family moved often; Tims spent his childhood in various places across Canada. He was an avid reader as a child, and it was through his reading habits that he explored his interest in art, architecture, spirituality and the occult, which would remain significant touchstones throughout his life and career, especially in his post-General Idea solo career. Long Tail
In statistics and business, a long tail of some distributions of numbers is the portion of the distribution having many occurrences far from the "head" or central part of the distribution. The distribution could involve popularities, random numbers of occurrences of events with various probabilities, etc. The term is often used loosely, with no definition or an arbitrary definition, but precise definitions are possible. In statistics, the term ''long-tailed distribution'' has a narrow technical meaning, and is a subtype of heavy-tailed distribution.
