Princess Joséphine-Charlotte Of Belgium
Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium (11 October 1927 – 10 January 2005), was the Grand Duchess consort of Luxembourg as the wife of Grand Duke Jean. She was the first child of King Leopold III of Belgium, and sister of the late King Baudouin and former King Albert II and aunt of King Philippe. She was also the first cousin of King Harald V of Norway and a maternal third cousin of Queen Elizabeth II. Childhood Joséphine-Charlotte was born in 1927 at the Royal Palace of Brussels. She was the oldest child and only daughter of the King Leopold III of Belgium and his first wife, Princess Astrid of Sweden. She was christened a month after her birth. Her godfather was her uncle, Prince Charles, Count of Flanders and her godmother was her future mother-in-law, Grand Duchess Charlotte of Luxembourg. Stuyvenberg Castle (french: Château du Stuyvenberg, nl, Kasteel van Stuyvenberg, german: Schloss Stuyvenberg) is a residence of the Belgian Royal Family, located in Laeken, Brussels. Château du Stuyvenberg is situated at an elevation of 56 meters. History and use Stuyvenberg Castle was built in 1725, acquired for 200,000 francs by the Belgian State in 1840, and later bought by Leopold II who donated it to the Royal Trust. It is near the Royal Castle of Laeken, the official residence of the King and Queen of the Belgians. Charlotte (Charlotte Adelgonde Elisabeth Marie Wilhelmine; 23 January 1896 – 9 July 1985) reigned as Grand Duchess of Luxembourg from 14 January 1919 until her abdication on 12 November 1964. She acceded to the throne on 14 January 1919 following the abdication of her sister, Marie-Adélaïde, due to political pressure over Marie-Adélaïde's role during the German occupation of Luxembourg during World War I. A referendum retained the monarchy with Charlotte as grand duchess. She married Prince Felix of Bourbon-Parma on 6 November 1919. They had six children. Following the 1940 German invasion of Luxembourg during World War II, Charlotte went into exile: first in France, then Portugal, Great Britain, and North America.
