The Apertura 2009 season (officially known as ''Torneo Apertura 2009'') was the twenty-third tournament of the Primera División de Fútbol Profesional since its establishment of an Apertura and Clausura format. FAS won the tournament for the 17th time in history, defeating Águila in the finale with a 3–2 victory in extra time. Isidro Metapán were the defending champions, having won their 3rd title the previous season and being the back to back champions. A total of 10 teams contested the league, with none getting relegated (relegation only occurs on Clausuras). The season began on August 14, 2009 and concluded on December 20, 2009. The 10 teams of the Primera División played 18 matches, playing each team twice (home and away). The top four teams qualified directly to the semifinals. Primera División De Fútbol De El Salvador
The ''Primera División'' of the (''Professional Football League''), more commonly known as ''La Liga Mayor'' or ''La Primera'', is the top professional association football, football league in El Salvador. It was established in 1969, and in 2011 had 10 clubs. Initially the league was run as a year-long tournament, but since 1998 there are two tournaments each year, much like in many other football leagues in the Americas. The Apertura season runs from August to December, while the Clausura season runs from February to July. Competition format La Liga Mayor follows the usual double Round-robin tournament, round-robin format. During the course of a given season (Apertura or Clausura), each club plays every other club twice, once at home and once away, for a total of 22 games. Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and no points for a loss. Eduardo Santana (November 29, 1958 – October 19, 2023) was a Brazilian association football, football player and manager. He last coached C.D. Dragón in the Segunda División de Fútbol Salvadoreño of El Salvador. Playing career A midfielder, Santana played for several clubs in Guatemala Xelajú (1981–1983), Aurora (1984–85), Municipal (1988), Deportivo Suchitepéquez (1989), Escuintla (1991–92), and Juventud Retalteca (1993–1994). Nelson Mauricio Ancheta Flores (born 30 July 1963 in Chalchuapa) is a former Salvadoran professional football player and currently manager. Playing career Nelson Ancheta began his career playing at Universidad Católica de El Salvador during his youth. The Estadio José Gregorio Martínez is a multi-use stadium located in the city of Chalatenango, El Salvador. Specifically in the Km 72 ½ mile of the road leading from San Salvador to the provincial capital, is used for football, where the local team Chalatenango plays. History The history of the stadium goes back to the 1970s, where the land which had been former farm called Totolco was acquired by the CEL and which would later be transferred to José Gregorio Martínez, the founder of Chalatenango. Martínez was a close friend of General Carlos Humberto Romero, who at that time was the president of El Salvador, and with his assistance a new stadium was built.
