The Prime Minister of Kazakhstan ( Kazakh Cyrillic: Қазақстан Республикасының Премьер-Министрі, Kazakh Latin: Qazaqstan Respublikasynyñ Premier-Ministrı, ; russian: Премьер-Министр Республики Казахстан) is the head of government of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the holder of the second highest office within the Republic of Kazakhstan, after the president of Kazakhstan. The prime minister heads the cabinet and advises the president in the every day execution of the functions of the Parliament of Kazakhstan. During the Soviet period, the post was formerly known as the chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic prior to its independence in 1991. The current incumbent prime minister is Alihan Smaiylov, who replaced Askar Mamin on 5 January 2022 in the wake of the 2022 protests. The Kazakh or simply Qazaq (Latin: or , Cyrillic: or , Arabic Script: or , , ) is a Turkic language of the Kipchak branch spoken in Central Asia by Kazakhs. It is closely related to Nogai, Kyrgyz and Karakalpak. It is the official language of Kazakhstan and a significant minority language in the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang, north-western China and in the Bayan-Ölgii Province of western Mongolia. Viktor Alekseevich Radus Zenkovich (31 December 1877, Archangel - 4 October, 1967, Moscow) was a Russian revolutionary Bolshevik who attained public office of chairman of the council of People's Commissars in the Kirghiz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and the Soviet Union. Alash (, ) was a political party and liberation movement in the Russian Republic and Socialist Russia, and the ruling party of Alash Autonomy on the territory of present-day Kazakhstan and Russia. They advocated for equal treatment between Kazakhs and Russians and the cessation of Russian settlement on the Kazakh lands. The 2022 Kazakh unrest, also known as Bloody January () or the January tragedy (), was a series of mass protests that began in Kazakhstan on 2 January 2022 after a sudden sharp increase in liquefied gas prices following the lifting of a government-enforced price cap on 1 January.
