Prieska
Prieska is a town on the south bank of the Orange River, in the province of the Northern Cape, in western South Africa. It is located on the southern bank of the Orange River, 130 km north-west of Britstown and 75 km south-east of Marydale. History It developed from a place to which farmers migrated when the pans were full, after rains. It was originally named ''Prieschap'', the name is derived from Korana and means ‘place of the lost she-goat’. It was administered by a village management board from 1882 and attained municipal status in 1892. In 2011 the town had a population of 14,246. Many residents, historically, worked at the nearby Koegas mine which extracted and processed blue asbestos. The town is 240 km south of Kimberley and lies on the R357 road. Koegas Mine
The Koegas mine was a crocidolite (blue asbestos) mine in Northern Cape, South Africa. It lies near to the town of Prieska and drew much of its workforce from there and Griquatown; though significant proportions also came from Botswana, Zimbabwe and Malawi. The mine was opened by Cape Asbestos Company Limited in 1893. Its small-scale operations were unprofitable and it temporarily ceased work in 1903. Production resumed in 1907 and the First World War led to a boom. The mine eventually became the largest crocidolite mine in the world. After a difficult period during the Great Depression the Second World War and post-war economic boom led to an increase in production, with up to 5,000 miners on site. Worker safety concerns were raised by mine inspectors throughout its operation and the housing, sanitation and medical facilities provided by Cape were regarded as substandard. Marydale
Marydale is a town in the Northern Cape province in western South Africa. Established in 1903 by the Dutch Reformed Church, Marydale was named after Mary Snyman, the wife of Mr GP Snyman, owner of the farm on which the town was laid out. The town is 76 km north-west of Prieska and lies near the N10 national road. Marydale is 75 km north-west of Prieska and 120 km south-east of Upington. It was established in 1902 on the farm Kalkput. History Marydale was donated as 11 undeveloped plots to the NGK by GP Snyman after he finished surveying his farm, Kalkput, in 1903. In 1904, a delegation from Marydale visited the council meeting of the Prieska Reformed Church to explore setting up the Marydale Reformed Church as a separate congregation. R357 (South Africa)
The R357 is a Regional Route in South Africa that connects Nieuwoudtville and Kimberley via Loeriesfontein and Prieska. Route The route's western origin is the R27 at Nieuwoudtville. It heads north-east to reach the R355, with which it is co-signed for 10 kilometres. The routes reach Louriesfontein, where they diverge. The R357 heads north-east again to reach Brandvlei. Here it again crosses the R27, at a staggered junction. East of the town, the route gives off the south-easterly R353, and heads east. It reaches Vanwyksvlei, where it meets the R361, the two are co-signed, and head north-east. The routes diverge just outside the town. The R357 continues east-north-east to Prieska. Just before the town, it meets the north-easterly R386 at its northern terminus. It then passes through Prieskapoort Pass and crosses the N10 to enter Prieska. Dricky Beukes
Dricky Beukes (29 December 1918 – 9 November 1999) was a South African writer of Afrikaans novels, short stories and radio dramas. Beukes wrote more than a hundred Afrikaans novels, a large number of short stories and numerous Afrikaans radio dramas, including some extensive pieces for the commercial station Springbok Radio. She died in 1999 in Bellville after a battle with blood cancer. There is a Dricky Beukes Street named after her in Kokrus, Vereeniging. Early life Hendrika Johanna van Staden was born on Seekoebaard farm in Prieska, Northern Cape, 29 December 1918. She was the youngest of 13 children. Britstown
Britstown is a small farming town situated in the Northern Cape province of South Africa, in the Pixley ka Seme District Municipality, Emthanjeni Local Municipality. The town is named after Hans Brits who settled here after he accompanied David Livingstone on a venture into the interior. Britstown lies in the heart of the Central Karoo and is located exactly halfway between Cape Town (via Three Sisters) and Johannesburg (via Kimberley) on the N12 national route, and thus is about 700 km from both cities. Gert Thys (born 12 November 1971) is a male long-distance runner from South Africa, who represented his native country in the marathon at the 1996 and 2004 Summer Olympics. Thys is a former African record holder in the marathon, and is the current holder of the South African record with his best of 2:06:33 from the 1999 Tokyo International Marathon, which was also the course record for that race. Biography Thys was born in Prieska, Northern Cape. He represented South Africa in the marathon at four consecutive editions of the World Championships in Athletics from 1999 to 2005. Kimberley, Northern Cape
Kimberley is the capital and largest city of the Northern Cape province of South Africa. It is located approximately 110 km east of the confluence of the Vaal and Orange Rivers. The city has considerable historical significance due to its diamond mining past and the siege during the Second Anglo-Boer war. British businessmen Cecil Rhodes and Barney Barnato made their fortunes in Kimberley, and Rhodes established the De Beers diamond company in the early days of the mining town.
