Pretty Persuasion (song)
"Pretty Persuasion" is a song by R.E.M. that was first released on the band's 1984 album '' Reckoning''. It was released as a promotional single and reached number 44 on ''Billboard'''s Rock Tracks chart. According to R.E.M. biographer Tony Fletcher, it is often regarded as "the 'archetypal' R.E.M. anthem". Background Although not released commercially until 1984, R.E.M. performed "Pretty Persuasion" live in concert as early as 1980 and 1981. A live version of the song was recorded for the band's 1983 debut album '' Murmur'' but was not released on that album, although the recording was eventually included as a bonus track on a 1992 release of ''Reckoning''. Producer Mitch Easter wanted to record the song again for ''Reckoning'' but the band, particularly lead singer Michael Stipe who no longer liked the song, was initially reluctant. "(Don't Go Back To) Rockville" is the second and final single released by American rock band R.E.M. from their second studio album, '' Reckoning''. The song failed to chart on either the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 or the UK Singles Charts. Background The song was written by Mike Mills (credited to Berry/Buck/Mills/Stipe), in 1980, as a plea to his then girlfriend, Ingrid Schorr, not to return to Rockville, Maryland, where her parents lived. Schorr, who later became a journalist, has written about her amusement with the factual inaccuracies about her relationship with Mills and the background of the song that often appear in books about the band. Eric Weisbard is an American music critic known for founding the Pop Conference, which is hosted annually by the Museum of Pop Culture (formerly known as the EMP Museum). He also organized the conference for many years. Career Weisbard serves as an associate professor of American studies at the University of Alabama. He is also the author of both a 33⅓ book entry about ''Use Your Illusion'' and the 2014 book ''Top 40 Democracy: The Rival Mainstreams of American Music'', and a former editor for ''Spin (magazine), Spin''. A twelve-string guitar (or 12-string guitar) is a steel-string guitar with 12 strings in six courses, which produces a thicker, more ringing tone than a standard six-string guitar. Typically, the strings of the lower four courses are tuned in octaves, with those of the upper two courses tuned in unison. The gap between the strings within each dual-string course is narrow, and the strings of each course are fretted and plucked as a single unit. The neck is wider, to accommodate the extra strings, and is similar to the width of a classical guitar neck. James Roger McGuinn (born James Joseph McGuinn III; July 13, 1942) is an American musician. He is best known for being the frontman and leader of the Byrds. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for his work with the Byrds.
