Presidents' Trophy (CIS)
The Presidents' Trophy is an annual Canadian sports award presented to the most outstanding defensive player in U Sports football. The trophy was first presented in 1980 after having been championed by two past presidents of Canadian university sports bodies. The name indirectly honours Ed Zemrau, past president of U Sports (then known as the Canadian Interuniversity Athletics Union); and Robert Doty, past president of Canada's university football championship game, then known as the College Bowl and now as the Vanier Cup. U Sports Football
U Sports football is the highest level of amateur play of Canadian football and operates under the auspices of U Sports (formerly Canadian Interuniversity Sport). Twenty-seven teams from Canadian universities are divided into four athletic conferences, drawing from the four regional associations of U Sports: Canada West Universities Athletic Association, Ontario University Athletics, Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec, and Atlantic University Sport. At the end of every season, the champions of each conference advance to semifinal bowl games; the winners of these meet in the Vanier Cup national championship. The origins of North American football can be traced here, where the first documented game was played at University College at the University of Toronto in 1861. Pawel Kruba (born March 21, 1990) is a Canadian football linebacker who is currently a free agent. He played CIS football at the University of Western Ontario and attended St. Anne Catholic High School in Windsor, Ontario. Peter Gorman Trophy
The Peter Gorman Trophy is awarded to the Rookie of the Year in U Sports Football. The Trophy acknowledges the great contribution Peter Gorman has made to the development of Canadian University Football. As founder of the Canadian College Bowl, his emphasis has always been on the youth of Canada, and is therefore associated with the award to encourage U Sports rookies. Hec Crighton Trophy
The Hec Crighton Trophy (sometimes referred to as the Hec Crighton Award) is awarded annually to the most outstanding Canadian football player in U Sports. The trophy is named after the late Hec Crighton - teacher, coach, referee, and author of the Official Football Rule Book and the U Sports Rule Book. It was first presented in 1967 by the board of directors of the Canadian College Bowl. It is the Canadian equivalent to the American NCAA Heisman Trophy. The Western Mustangs program has produced the most Hec Crighton winners with seven as well as the most individual winners with six ( Tim Tindale won the award twice). Chris Flynn has won the Hec Crighton Trophy three times, consecutively, while no other player has won the award more than twice. Fraser Sopik
Fraser Sopik (born April 3, 1997) is a professional Canadian football linebacker for the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League (CFL). University career Sopik played U Sports football for the Western Mustangs from 2015 to 2018. He won the Bruce Coulter Award in 2017 as the most valuable defensive player in Western's Vanier Cup win that year. He also won the Presidents' Trophy in his final year with Western in 2018. Professional career Calgary Stampeders Sopik was drafted in the fourth round, 31st overall, by the Stampeders in the 2018 CFL Draft and signed with the team to a two-year contract on May 13, 2019. Adam Auclair (born March 29, 1996) is a Canadian professional Canadian football, football linebacker for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League (CFL). John Rush (Canadian Football)
John Rush (born October 23, 1993) is a former Canadian football fullback. He was signed as a free agent on November 30, 2015 by the Blue Bombers after going unselected in the 2015 CFL Draft. Rush played CIS football at linebacker for the Guelph Gryphons from 2011 to 2015 where he won the Presidents' Trophy in his final year as university football's best defensive player. Vanier Cup
The Vanier Cup (french: Coupe Vanier) is the championship of Canadian university football. It is organized by U Sports football and is currently played between the winners of the Uteck Bowl and the Mitchell Bowl. It is named after Georges Vanier, the former governor general of Canada and was first awarded in 1965 to the winner of an invitational event contested between two teams that were selected by a panel. In 1967, the trophy was declared the official "CIAU National Football Championship" and a playoff system was instituted. From its creation until 1982, it was known as the Canadian College Bowl. Cory James Greenwood (born June 5, 1985) is a professional Canadian football linebacker for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL).
