Presidency Of Lai Ching-te
The presidency of Lai Ching-te is set to begin on 20 May 2024, when Lai Ching-te will be sworn in as 16th president of the Republic of China and the eighth president of the republic since it became established on the island of Taiwan, succeeding Tsai Ing-wen. Lai and running mate Hsiao Bi-khim won the 2024 presidential election with 5.58 million votes, breaking the practice of two-term political party rotation with the Kuomintang since the first direct presidential election in 1996, and retaining the presidency for the Democratic Progressive Party for a record consecutive third term. However, unlike the previous two-term presidency of Tsai Ing-wen, the DPP failed to obtain a majority of seats in the Legislative Yuan alone, making Lai Ching-te's government the second minority government since Taiwan's democratization. Lai Ching-te
William Lai Ching-te (; born 6 October 1959) is a Taiwanese politician who has been the Vice President of the Republic of China, Vice President of the Republic of China (Taiwan) since 2020. He served as a legislator in the Legislative Yuan from 1999 to 2010, and as Mayor of Tainan from 2010 to 2017, prior to taking office as premier of the Republic of China. On 24 November 2018, he announced his intention to resign from the premiership after the Democratic Progressive Party suffered a major defeat in local elections, and left office on 14 January 2019 after the swearing-in of his successor Su Tseng-chang. Lai mounted a challenge against Tsai in the 2019 Democratic Progressive Party presidential primary and after defeat, served as the running mate of President Tsai Ing-wen in the 2020 Taiwan presidential election in which the tandem was victorious. Legislative Yuan
The Legislative Yuan is the unicameral legislature of the Republic of China (Taiwan) located in Taipei. The Legislative Yuan is composed of 113 members, who are directly elected for 4-year terms by people of the Taiwan Area through a parallel voting system. Originally located in Nanking, the Legislative Yuan, along with the National Assembly (electoral college) and the Control Yuan (upper house), formed the tricameral parliament under the original 1947 Constitution. The Legislative Yuan previously had 759 members representing each constituencies of all provinces, municipalities, Tibet, Outer Mongolia and various professions. The National Security Bureau (NSB; ) is the principal intelligence agency of Taiwan. History The organization was created in 1955 by a ROC Presidential Directive from Chiang Kai-shek, to supervise and coordinate all security-related administrative organizations, military agencies and KMT organizations in Taiwan.
