''Present – The Very Best of Steeleye Span'' is the 17th studio album by Steeleye Span, released in 2002. The album contains new recordings of previously released songs. The project began with a poll on Peter Knight's website, asking fans about which of the band's songs they would most like to see new versions of. At the time the poll was taken, the band was a state of near-collapse. Personal tensions during the recording of ''Bedlam Born'' had led to the departure of Gay Woods and Tim Harries, and health problems had induced Bob Johnson into retirement. When the poll was completed, Knight persuaded several past members of the band, Maddy Prior, Rick Kemp and Liam Genockey, to return to the studio; and he also coaxed Johnson out of retirement. The newly reformed line-up, similar to the band's famous mid-1970s membership, released the results as a two-disc set in 2002. Lyke-Wake Dirge
The "Lyke-Wake Dirge" is a traditional English folk song and dirge listed as number 8194 in the Roud Folk Song Index. The song tells of the soul's travel, and the hazards it faces, on its way from earth to purgatory. Though it is from the Christian era and features references to Christianity, much of the symbolism is thought to be of pre-Christian origin. The title The title refers to the act of watching over the dead between the death and funeral, known as a wake. "Lyke" is an obsolete word meaning a corpse. It is related to other extant Germanic words such as the German , the Dutch and the Norwegian , all meaning "corpse". It survives in modern English in the expression ''lychgate'', the roofed gate at the entrance to a churchyard, where, in former times, a dead body was placed before burial, and the fictional undead monster type lich. Now We Are Six (album)
''Now We Are Six'' is the sixth studio album by British folk rock band Steeleye Span. Its title (borrowed from ''Winnie-the-Pooh'' author A.A. Milne's collection of poems for children) refers to both its sequence among their albums, and the band's size, in light of the addition of drummer Nigel Pegrum. The album was released in 1974 through Chrysalis Records. It reached number 13 in the UK albums chart. Although two session drummers had been employed on the group's debut, subsequent albums had seen little use of percussion. However, after '' Parcel of Rogues'' there was a conscious decision to add a full-time drummer to bolster the band's rock-oriented sound. Pegrum also contributed flute and oboe parts. Thomas The Rhymer
Sir Thomas de Ercildoun, better remembered as Thomas the Rhymer (fl. c. 1220 – 1298), also known as Thomas Learmont or True Thomas, was a Scottish laird and reputed prophet from Earlston (then called "Erceldoune") in the Borders. Thomas' gift of prophecy is linked to his poetic ability. He is often cited as the author of the English ''Sir Tristrem'', a version of the Tristram legend, and some lines in Robert Mannyng's ''Chronicle'' may be the source of this association. It is not clear if the name ''Rhymer'' was his actual surname or merely a sobriquet. In literature, he appears as the protagonist in the tale about Thomas the Rhymer carried off by the " Queen of Elfland" and returned having gained the gift of prophecy, as well as the inability to tell a lie. ''Sails of Silver'' is the eleventh studio album by British folk rock band Steeleye Span. It was released in 1980 by Chrysalis Records. The album was produced two years after the band's ostensible break-up. At the request of Chrysalis Records Peter Knight and Bob Johnson both returned, replacing their own replacements Martin Carthy and John Kirkpatrick, who departed after the release of ''Live at Last''. Despite being produced by Elton John's producer Gus Dudgeon, ''Sails of Silver'' was a commercial failure, and this proved a final straw for Tim Hart, who departed the band, leaving Maddy Prior as the band's sole remaining founding member. ''Hark! The Village Wait'' is the debut album by the British folk rock band Steeleye Span, first released in 1970. It is the only album to feature the original lineup of the band as they broke up and reformed with an altered membership immediately after its release, without ever having performed live. Therefore, it is one of only two Steeleye Span studio albums to feature two female vocalists (Maddy Prior and Gay Woods), the other being ''Time'' (1996). ''Back in Line'' is the twelfth studio album by British folk rock band Steeleye Span. The album was released in 1986, after a hiatus of almost 6 years. It is their first album without founding member Tim Hart, who quit the music business entirely. It is also the last album they recorded with Maddy Prior's husband, Rick Kemp, until ''They Called Her Babylon''; Kemp suffered a shoulder injury that forced him to stop playing for a long time. Like the previous album, ''Sails of Silver'', this album was not well received by fans, and reviews tend to see the album as being slickly packaged but erratic in quality. Blackleg Miner
"Blackleg Miner" is a 19th-century English folk song, originally from Northumberland (as can be deduced from the dialect in the song and the references in it to the villages of Seghill and Seaton Delaval). Its Roud number is 3193. The song is one of the most controversial English folk songs owing to its depiction of violence against strikebreakers. Origins The song is believed to originate from the miners' lockout of 1844. Although this was a national lock-out, the language of the song suggests that it refers to the dispute in the north-east coalfield, which lasted roughly 20 weeks. The lockout largely collapsed as a result of "blackleg" labour. The village of Seghill, mentioned in the song, was the site of a mass eviction of striking miners during the 1844 lockout.
