Pres-Lam
Pres-Lam is a method of mass engineered timber construction that uses high strength unbonded steel cables or bars to create connections between timber beams and columns or columns and walls and their foundations. As a prestressed structure the steel cables clamp members together creating connections which are stronger and more compact than traditional timber fastening systems. In earthquake zones, the steel cables can be coupled with internal or external steel reinforcing which provide additional strength and energy dissipation creating a damage avoiding structural system. Pres-Lam can be used in conjunction with any mass engineered timber product such as glue laminated timber, laminated veneer lumber or cross laminated timber. In structural engineering, a prestressed structure is a load-bearing structure whose overall integrity, stability and security depend, primarily, on ''prestressing'': the intentional creation of permanent stresses in the structure for the purpose of improving its performance under various service conditions. The basic types of prestressing are: *Precompression with mostly the structure's own weight *Pre-tensioning with high-strength embedded tendons *Post-tensioning with high-strength bonded or unbonded tendons Today, the concept of a prestressed structure is widely employed in the design of buildings, underground structures, TV towers, power stations, floating storage and offshore facilities, nuclear reactor vessels, and numerous bridge systems. In thermodynamics, dissipation is the result of an irreversible process that takes place in homogeneous thermodynamic systems. In a dissipative process, energy (internal, bulk flow kinetic, or system potential) transforms from an initial form to a final form, where the capacity of the final form to do thermodynamic work is less than that of the initial form. For example, heat transfer is dissipative because it is a transfer of internal energy from a hotter body to a colder one. Following the second law of thermodynamics, the entropy varies with temperature (reduces the capacity of the combination of the two bodies to do work), but never decreases in an isolated system.
