Premio Lydia Tesio
The Premio Lydia Tesio is a Group 2 flat horse race in Italy open to thoroughbred fillies and mares aged three years or older. It is run at Capannelle over a distance of 2,000 metres (about 1¼ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late October. History The event is named in memory of Lydia Tesio, the wife of Federico Tesio. For a period it was restricted to fillies aged three or four. It was given Group 2 status in 1975. The race was first promoted to Group 1 level in 1977, but it was relegated back to Group 2 in 1988. It was opened to five-year-old mares in 1990, and its upper age limit became unrestricted in 1992. The Premio Lydia Tesio regained Group 1 status in 2004. Its recent sponsors have included Darley, Shadwell and Longines. From 2017 to 2018 the Premio Lydia Tesio is Italy's only remaining Group 1 race. It downgraded to Group 2 at 2019. Capannelle Racecourse
Capannelle Racecourse ( it, Ippodromo delle Capannelle) is a horse racing venue in Rome, Italy. The course was constructed in 1881, and it was rebuilt in 1926 to a design by Paolo Vietti-Violi. It was recently the venue of two Group 1 flat races – the Premio Lydia Tesio (downgraded to Group 2 in 2019) and the Premio Roma (downgraded to Group 2 in 2017). The track also stages the most valuable flat race in Italy, the Derby Italiano, which was downgraded to Group 2 status in 2009. Fulke Johnson Houghton
Richard Fulke Johnson Houghton (born 1940) is a British retired Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. He trained over 1,200 winners in a career which lasted from 1961 until 2006. The best of his horses included Ribocco, Ribero, Habitat, Rose Bowl, Ile de Bourbon and Double Form. Background Johnson Houghton was born in 1940 to the trainer Gordon Johnson Houghton and his wife Helen. He was named after his mother's twin brother Fulke Walwyn. Johnson Houghton was educated at Eton College before working as an assistant trainer in Britain and France. When Gordon Johnson Houghton died in 1952 Helen took over the Woodway stable at Blewbury in Berkshire but under Jockey Club rules, women were not allowed to hold a training licence. She therefore managed the yard through assistants including Charles Jerdein and Peter Walwyn. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum ( ar, حمدان بن راشد أل مكتوم, '; 25 December 1945 – 24 March 2021) was an Emirati politician, the deputy ruler of Dubai and the minister of finance and industry of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). He was the second son of the late ruler Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum was the head of the UAE's delegation at the International Monetary Fund and the OPEC Fund. William Fisher Hunter Carson, OBE (born 16 November 1942) is a retired jockey in thoroughbred horse racing. Life and career Best known as "Willie", Carson was born in Stirling, Scotland in 1942. He was apprenticed to Captain Gerald Armstrong at his stables at Tupgill, North Yorkshire. His first winner in Britain was Pinker's Pond in a seven-furlong apprentice handicap at Catterick Bridge Racecourse on 19 July 1962. Gianfranco Dettori (born 25 April 1941) is an Italian retired Thoroughbred horse racing jockey. Dettori was born in Serramanna, in what is now the Province of South Sardinia. During his career, he won an Italian riding championship thirteen times. Philip Blacker
Philip Blacker (b. 1949) was a jockey until his retirement in 1982. Since then, he has been a sculptor of sporting arts. He is the son of Cecil Blacker. Career Jockey Blacker became a professional jockey at the start of the 1969/1970 season and remained so for 13 years, during which time he rode 340 winners. He is a Member of the Jockey Club, and has sat on various committees including the British Horseracing Authorities Security and Investigations Committee. In 1973 Blacker finished fourth on Spanish Steps in the first Grand National won by Red Rum. In 1977 Blacker finished seventh on Happy Ranger to Red Rum, winning his third and final Grand National. Paul Cole
Paul F. I. Cole (born 11 September 1941) is a British racehorse trainer. Since 1987 he has been based at Whatcombe Estate in Berkshire, the former stables of Dick Dawson and Arthur Budgett. He was British flat racing Champion Trainer in 1991, the year in which he trained Generous to win the Epsom Derby. Thomas Richard Quinn, better known as Richard Quinn (born 2 December 1961) is a Scottish jockey. Life and career After leaving Bannockburn High School in 1977, aged 15, he moved to York to work as a stable lad. This career led to Quinn moving to work for Paul Cole in Lambourn for 17 years (1981–1998). After some years as a freelance jockey, he joined Henry Cecil in Newmarket (2000–2004). Quinn has raced with owners Prince Fahd bin Salman (1990–1991) and John L. Dunlop. Among other victories, Quinn has achieved 26 victories at Goodwood Racecourse. John Dunlop (racehorse Trainer)
John Leeper Dunlop (10 July 1939 – 7 July 2018) was an English race horse trainer based in Arundel, Sussex. He trained the winners of 74 Group One races, including 10 British Classics, with over 3000 winners in total. He was the British flat racing Champion Trainer in 1995. Born in Tetbury, he first took out a training licence in 1966.
