Premio Guido Berardelli
The Premio Guido Berardelli is a Group 3 flat horse race in Italy open to two-year-old thoroughbreds. It is run at Capannelle over a distance of 1,800 metres (about 1⅛ miles), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late October or early November. History The event was formerly known as the Premio Tevere. It was named after the Tevere, the Italian name of the Tiber river. The race was given its present title following the death of Guido Berardelli in 1985. Berardelli served as president of UNIRE, a governing body of horse racing in Italy. For a period the race was contested over 1,600 metres and classed at Group 2 level. It was extended to 2,000 metres in 1988, and shortened to 1,800 metres in 1995. It was relegated to Group 3 status in 2002. Capannelle Racecourse
Capannelle Racecourse ( it, Ippodromo delle Capannelle) is a horse racing venue in Rome, Italy. The course was constructed in 1881, and it was rebuilt in 1926 to a design by Paolo Vietti-Violi. It was recently the venue of two Group 1 flat races – the Premio Lydia Tesio (downgraded to Group 2 in 2019) and the Premio Roma (downgraded to Group 2 in 2017). The track also stages the most valuable flat race in Italy, the Derby Italiano, which was downgraded to Group 2 status in 2009. Group 2 races include the Premio Ribot and the Premio Presidente della Repubblica. Group 3 races include the Premio Tudini, Premio Carlo Chiesa, Premio Carlo e Francesco Aloisi, Premio Carlo d'Alessio, and Premio Guido Berardelli. Bob Back
Bob Back (26 May 1981 – January 2011) was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. He won the Premio Tevere as a two-year-old and the Valdoe Stakes as a three-year-old, but reached his peak in 1985 when he won the Premio Presidente della Repubblica before recording a 33/1 upset win over a very strong field in the Prince of Wales's Stakes. He was later exported to race in the United States but failed to reproduce his European form, winning one minor race from fourteen attempts. He later became a successful breeding stallion, making his biggest impact as a sire of chasers and hurdlers. Bolkonski (horse)
Bolkonski (foaled 1972) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Originally trained in Italy, the colt moved to England for the 1975 season where he recorded an upset victory over Grundy in the classic 2000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse. He went on to win two other major British races over one mile, the St James's Palace Stakes at Ascot and the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood. At the end of the season he was retired to stud where he had limited success as a sire of winners. Background Bolkonski was a small but powerfully-built chestnut horse with a white star and white socks on his hind feet, bred in Ireland by the Woodpark Stud. John Andrew Reid (born 6 August 1955 in Banbridge County Down, Northern Ireland) is a retired flat race jockey. Reid served as an apprentice in his native Ireland to Leslie Crawford, before moving to England and joining Verley Bewicke. His first Classic victory came in the 1982 1,000 Guineas aboard On The House. His first major Group 1 race win came in the 1978 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on Ile de Bourbon. Reid won this race for a second time in 1997 on Swain, when the top-class thoroughbreds Helissio, Singspiel and Pilsudski were all beaten off.
