Prealps
The Alpine foothills, or Prealps (german: Voralpen; french: Préalpes; it, Prealpi; ), may refer generally to any foothills at the base of the Alps in Europe. They are the transition zone between the High Alps and the Swiss Plateau and the Bavarian Alpine Foreland in the north, as well as to the Pannonian Basin (Alpokalja) in the east, the Padan Plain in the south and the Rhone Valley in the west. French Prealps
The French Prealps (french: Préalpes) are a group of subalpine mountain ranges of medium elevation located immediately west of the French Alps. They roughly stretch from Lake Geneva southwest to the rivers Isère and Drôme; east to a line running from Chamonix, to Albertville, to Grenoble, to Gap, to Barcelonette; and south from Grasse to Vence. In the northern subalpine regions, the various ranges are easily identifiable by geographical separations, such as the Voreppe Gorge between Vercors and Chartreuse, or Chambéry, which sits in a valley between the Bauges and Chartreuse ranges. In the southern subalpine regions, the ranges are generally disorganized and lack the wide, deep valleys that divide them in the north. Bavarian Prealps
The Bavarian Prealps (german: Bayerische Voralpen) are a mountain range within the Northern Limestone Alps in south Germany. They include the Bavarian Prealp region between the river Loisach to the west and the river Inn to the east; the range is about long and wide. The term is not defined politically, but alpine-geographically because small areas of the Bavarian Prealps lie in Tyrol (e.g. the Hinteres Sonnwendjoch south of the Rotwand). The term is not to be confused with the Bavarian Alps or the Bavarian Alpine Foreland. These terms include the whole of the alpine region (together with parts of the Wetterstein, the Karwendel, etc.) and the whole Alpine Foreland on Bavarian state territory. Except in the Ester Mountains in the extreme west, the summits of the Bavarian Prealps are all below 2000 metres in height and only a few have prominent limestone cliffs. They are located in Slovenia and, for a small part of their northernmost area, in Austria. The Styrian Prealps (in German ''Steirisches Randgebirge'', in Slovenian ''Štajersko Robno hribovje'', in Hungarian ''Stájer Elő-Alpok'') is the proposed name for a subdivision of mountains in a new, and as yet unadopted, classification of the Alps, located in Austria and, marginally, in Slovenia and Hungary. Bergamasque Prealps
The Bergamasque Prealps () are a mountain range within the Alps. The range is located in Lombardy, in the north of Italy. Geography Administratively the range belongs to the Italian province of Bergamo and, to a lesser extent, to the provinces of Lecco and Brescia. The western slopes of the mountains are drained by the Adda, the central and eastern part of the range by Oglio and other minor rivers and streams, all of them tributaries of the Po. Upper Austrian Prealps
The Upper Austrian Prealps (german: Oberösterreichische Voralpen) is a mountain range in Austria which, according to the Categorisation of the Eastern Alps, covers the region between the valley of the Traun (Gmunden) in the west and the Enns valley in the east, from Steyr in the north. It is usually counted as part of the Enns- and Steyrtal Prealps and Salzkammergut Prealps (separated somewhat by the Steyr valley). Politically it covers the districts of Steyr-Land and Kirchdorf.
