Pratt Prize For Music Theatre
The Pratt Prize for Music Theatre was an award for an unperformed Australian musical. It was initiated through the Pratt Foundation in 2001 to stimulate music theatre writers and composers to create work with commercial appeal. The award originally comprised a $50,000 cash prize and a workshop valued at $30,000. Pratt Foundation
The Pratt Foundation is an Australian philanthropic organisation based in Melbourne and established in 1978 by Jeanne and Richard Pratt. According to its Values Statement, it has "the shared vision of supporting charitable enterprises and adding value to philanthropy". The Pratt Foundation claims to be one of the largest private sources of philanthropy in Australia. Its chief executive is Melbourne journalist Sam Lipski Samuel Lipski (born 1938) is an Australian journalist. Sideshow Alley (musical)
''Sideshow Alley'' is an Australian musical by Paul Keelan and Gary Young. Set amongst the 'misfits', 'outcasts' and 'curiosities' of a 1950s Outback travelling show, ''Sideshow Alley'' tells the story of Rita, an Italian fortune-teller, Billy, a rugged tent boxer, and Alec, a charismatic drifter, intertwined in a love triangle filled with secrets and lies. It concerns themes of unbridled love and the discovery of identity in a world of prejudice. Development Young and Keelan's ''Sideshow Alley'' received the inaugural Pratt Prize for Music Theatre in 2002. The prize included a workshop production, staged at Melbourne's Chapel Off Chapel in August 2003 directed by Gale Edwards with a cast including Tamsin Carroll, Greg Stone and Robyn Arthur. Metro Street
''Metro Street'' is an original Australian musical with book, music and lyrics by Matthew Lee Robinson. It was awarded the Pratt Prize for Music Theatre in 2004, and went through many workshops and readings, including at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival in 2006, before its world premiere season with the State Theatre Company of South Australia in April 2009. Development Robinson conceived the title song to ''Metro Street'' while catching a tram in Melbourne in 2002. In 2004 Robinson wrote a first draft script for submission to the New York Musical Theatre Festival, and fleshed out this draft to enter for the Pratt Prize. The first two workshops for the piece occurred in August 2004. This first draft which won he Pratt Prize had a mother, her son, his girlfriend, a country girl and a street-side busker; the busker was cut in draft two, and replaced with the grandma character. Matthew Lee Robinson
Matthew Lee Robinson is an Australian composer/lyricist and actor, most known for his musical theatre and television work. Career Robinson was born in Rockhampton, Queensland, and graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts with a Bachelor of Arts (Musical Theatre). Direct from graduating he was cast in the original Australian cast of '' Mamma Mia!'', during which time he began writing the songs which would form the basis of his first musical '' Metro Street''. Robinson was cast as Teague in the World Premiere of Australian play ''God's Last Acre'' for Playbox Theatre Company (now Malthouse Theatre, Melbourne) and appeared in guest roles on television's ''Blue Heelers'' and '' Stingers'' as well as the telemovie ''Like Mother, Like Son: The Strange Story of Sante and Kenny Kimes'', appearing opposite Mary Tyler Moore.
