Powerscourt (horse)
Powerscourt (1 April 2000 – 17 July 2021) was a British-bred Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and sire, best known for his two runs in the Arlington Million: he was disqualified after finishing first in 2004 but returned to win the race in the following year. He raced in Ireland, Britain, Germany, the United States, Japan, Hong Kong and the United Arab Emirates in four seasons of racing, winning five of his twenty-one starts. His other major wins came in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at three and the Tattersalls Gold Cup at four. In addition to his wins he was placed in several major races including the Racing Post Trophy, Irish St. Leger, Prince of Wales's Stakes, Bayerisches Zuchtrennen, Irish Champion Stakes and Breeders' Cup Turf. After his retirement from racing he stood as a breeding stallion in the United States and Turkey. Joe Gilmore (19 May 1922 – 18 December 2015) was one of the longest running Head Barmen at The Savoy Hotel's American Bar. He was born in Belfast and moved to London in 1938. Gilmore started as a trainee barman at The American Bar in 1940 and was appointed Head Barman in 1955, a position he held until he retired in 1976. Over his years as Head Barman, Gilmore invented numerous cocktails to mark special events and important guests, a longstanding tradition at the American Bar. Powerscourt Covered Bridge
The Powerscourt Covered Bridge is a covered bridge that takes the First Concession Road across the Chateauguay River in Hinchinbrooke, Quebec. It is also known as the Percy Bridge. It was constructed in 1861, and employs the McCallum inflexible arched truss, developed by Daniel McCallum. It was the only McCallum truss bridge that was not a railway bridge, and since wooden truss railway bridges have all but been replaced with steel and concrete bridges, it is the last bridge of its kind in the world. In 2009 it was fully restored to its original 1861 plans. It is supported on three masonry piers and the two spans are structurally independent of each other. The house, originally a 13th-century castle, was extensively altered during the 18th century by German architect Richard Cassels, starting in 1731 and finishing in 1741. A fire in 1974 left the house lying as a shell until it was renovated in 1996. The Wingfield family had long coveted the lands of Phelim O'Toole of Powerscourt (d. 1603), seeking to draw Phelim O'Toole into an act of rebellion, the penalty for which was forfeiture. The feud climaxed on 14 May 1603 when the Wingfields murdered Phelim in the place known as the Killing Hollow near Powerscourt, despite the fact that Phelim's grandson and heir Turlough son of Phelim's son (d. 1616) remained in occupation of Powerscourt. Powerscourt House, Dublin
Powerscourt House is the former Dublin townhouse of Viscount Powerscourt and now the Powerscourt Townhouse Centre, located on South William Street, Dublin. History It was constructed in the eighteenth century for Richard Wingfield, 3rd Viscount Powerscourt. He was a member of the Irish House of Lords. The townhouse enabled him and his family to stay there when they were visiting from their Powerscourt Estate in Enniskerry, County Wicklow. The House was designed by Robert Mack and dates from between 1771 to 1774, and has been characterised as the "last-gasp Palladianism on a grand scale on a narrow street". The court at the rear of the building was created with the addition of 3 brown-brick office buildings in 1809 to 1811. Powerscourt Waterfall ( ga, Eas Chonaill) is the second highest waterfall in Republic of Ireland, Ireland at high, it is located at the base of the Glensoulan Valley on the River Dargle near Enniskerry, Enniskerry, County Wicklow. Powerscourt is overlooked by the peaks of Djouce () and Maulin (), and flows continuously all year in a Waterfall#types, horsetail-fan pattern. The waterfall is part of the Powerscourt Estate, which is open to the public for an entrance fee. Lord Francis Powerscourt is a fictional Victorian-Edwardian detective who has appeared in fifteen novels by the author David Dickinson. Background Powerscourt is descended from Irish aristocracy, his ancestral home is Powerscourt House in County Wicklow, Ireland. It is not clear whether he is properly Lord Powerscourt, i.e. a peer in his own right, or Lord Francis Powerscourt, i.e. the younger son of a high-ranking peer. Powerscourt's parents both died of Influenza while he was a child. Powerscourt was educated at Eton followed by Cambridge University. His early (and so far largely undocumented) career was with army intelligence in India and Afghanistan where he served with distinction.
