Power Lunches
Power Lunches Arts Café was a music venue, rehearsal space, and creative hub located on Kingsland Road in Dalston, a district of the London Borough of Hackney. It opened in 2011 and closed in 2015. It started out with gigs planned to be only at weekends, but later became a prominent feature of Hackney’s DIY music scene with gigs most nights every week. Though originally genuinely also a café, it eventually stopped serving food. The cafe hosted performances in its basement, the absolute maximum capacity of both floors was 150. These were most often concerts by local bands, but also saw acts from elsewhere in the UK, as well as further afield. Staff of the venue hosted a radio show showcasing the type of musicians to appear there on NTS Radio between 2012 and 2015. Trash Kit
Trash Kit is a British post-punk trio formed in 2008 in London. Its members are Ray Aggs (guitar and vocals), Gill Partington (bass guitar), and Rachel Horwood (drums and vocals). Original bassist Ros Murray was previously of the band Electrelane. Ray Aggs also plays in Sacred Paws and Shopping, and Rachel Horwood in Bamboo and Bas Jan (the latter also featuring Serafina Steer). Gill Partington and Rachel Horwood also played together in Halo Halo. They have been compared to UK punk and post punk acts like The Slits, the Raincoats, and the Au Pairs, as well as noting the West African highlife influence on Aggs' guitar lines. Trash Kit themselves listed early influences as Y Pants, Ikue Mori of DNA, and Marnie Stern. Lorely Rodriguez (born October 19, 1989), known professionally as Empress Of, is a Honduran-American singer, songwriter, musician and record producer based in Los Angeles, California. To date, she has released three studio albums via XL Recordings and Terrible Records, her critically acclaimed debut, '' Me'' (2015), '' Us'' (2018) and '' I'm Your Empress Of'' (2020). The Ethical Debating Society
The Ethical Debating Society (aka T.E.D.S.) are a three-piece DIY punk, post-riot grrrl group from London. They have been described as "one of the most exciting DIY bands" in the UK. History Initially a solo project for vocalist/guitarist Tegan Christmas, The Ethical Debating Society formed as a band in 2009 with Lauren Darling (guitar) and Chris Morris (drums). They received an early name-check in The Guardian from Everett True. Recordings made with producer Ant Chapman were initially unreleased, although two tracks were included on a later EP. By 2010 Darling and Morris had left and Tegan continued with a varying line up until the group settled as Tegan with Eli Tupa and Kris Martin in 2013. Shopping is a British post-punk trio based in London and Glasgow. Its members are Rachel Aggs (guitar and vocals), Billy Easter (bass guitar and vocals), and Andrew Milk (drums and vocals), who formed the band in November 2012 out of their previous band, Covergirl. The band released its first album, ''Consumer Complaints'', on 11 April 2013 on Mïlk Records, a record label run by Easter and Milk; it was re-released by FatCat Records in the United States in 2015. Their second album, ''Why Choose'', was released on 2 October 2015 on FatCat Records. Their third album was ''The Official Body'', which was produced by Edwyn Collins and released on FatCat Records on 19 January 2018. Sophie Xeon (17 September 198630 January 2021), known mononymously as Sophie (stylised in all caps), was a Scottish music producer, songwriter, and DJ. Known for a brash and experimental take on pop music that helped pioneer the 2010s hyperpop microgenre, Sophie worked closely with artists from the PC Music label, including A.G. Cook and GFOTY, and produced for acts such as Charli XCX, Vince Staples, Kim Petras, Madonna, Let's Eat Grandma, and Namie Amuro. Sophie, who initially remained anonymous and later came out as a transgender woman, came to prominence with the breakthrough singles " Bipp" (2013) and "Lemonade" (2014), which were collected on the compilation album ''Product'' (2015). Sean Nicholas Savage (born London May 30th, 1986) is a Canadian Singer, Songwriter, and Musical Playwright. He has been described by Emilie Friedlander in an article for ''The Fader'' as "a singer-songwriter, madcap philosopher, and all-around scene-pillar in the particular freak-flag-flying sector of the Canadian music community. He is known for his prolific output, poetic lyrics and varied musical style. Sean Nicholas Savage has released exclusively on Arbutus Records, and was one of the first artists to join the label after its inception in 2009. Sauna Youth
Sauna Youth is a London-based post-punk band formed by ex-members of punk bands The Steal and Captain Everything! in 2009. They have released three albums, ''Dreamlands'' (2012), ''Distractions'' (2015), and ''Deaths'' (2018), plus various singles. The current members of Sauna Youth also play in the band Monotony, an alter ego of sorts where they all switch instruments. The two bands released a split single on Upset the Rhythm in 2015. Rolo Tomassi are an English band from Sheffield. Their name is taken from a dialogue in the film ''L.A. Confidential''. Neils Children
Neils Children are an English rock band, formed in 1999 in Harlow, Essex, England, by lead singer and guitarist John Linger, drummer Brandon Jacobs and bassist Tom Hawkins. The band were originally based in their hometown of Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, and were based around the nucleus of Linger and Jacobs who continued the band with a number of diffent bass players. Career Neils Children formed in 1999 at Harlow College where John Linger and Brandon Jacobs were studying music with Tom Hawkins. The band's name came from Linger's obsession with 1960s proto-punk band John's Children; 'Neil' was the nickname of Hawkins, the group's original bassist, due to him apparently resembling ''Men Behaving Badly'' star Neil Morrissey. Joanna Gruesome
Joanna Gruesome were a five-piece noise pop band from Cardiff, Wales. The name of the group is a reference to musician Joanna Newsom. They released two albums and a number of singles. History Joanna Gruesome were formed in 2010 in Cardiff. Their debut album received praise from ''Pitchfork'', ''This is fake DIY'', and '' Rough Trade''. Joanna Gruesome were known for their energetic live shows, as well as their forthright feminist and anti-homophobic views. Good Throb
Good Throb was a feminist punk band from London that was active between 2010 and 2016. They consisted of KY Ellie (Ellie Roberts) on vocals, BB Thing (Bryony Beynon) on guitar, Ash Tray (Ashleigh Holland) on bass and L-Hard (Louis Harding) on drums. The band formed after having all met through the London punk scene. They started with the intention of everyone taking part doing something new to them, whether that was playing an instrument or being the vocalist. Beynon and Harding had previously played together in a band called The Sceptres where Beynon was vocalist and Harding was on bass. Gnarwolves
Gnarwolves were a British punk rock band, formed in 2011 and based in Brighton, England. The band consisted of vocalist and guitarist Thom Weeks, bass guitarist and vocalist Charlie Piper, and drummer Max Weeks.
