Potštejn (german: Pottenstein) is a municipality and village in Rychnov nad Kněžnou District in the Hradec Králové Region of the Czech Republic. It has about 1,000 inhabitants. Administrative parts The village of Brná is an administrative part of Potštejn. Etymology The name of the municipality was derived from name of castle with the same name, which was named after its founder Půta of Drslavic: Puttenstein, misspelled as Potštejn. Geography Potštejn is located about south of Rychnov nad Kněžnou and southeast of Hradec Králové. It lies on the border of three geomorphological regions: Orlice Table, Svitavy Uplands and Orlické Foothills. The highest point is at above sea level. The municipality is situated in the valley of the Divoká Orlice River. History The first written mention of the castle of Potštejn is from 1259, 1287 or 1295. Vilém II of Pernštejn (german: Wilhelm II. von Pernstein or ''Wilhelm II. von Bernstein'', cs, Vilém II. z Pernštejna or ''Vilém z Pernštejna a na Helfštejně''; 1438 – 8 April 1521) was a Czech nobleman. He held the office of High Treasurer of Moravia from 1474 to 1487. He was High Marshall of Bohemia from 1483 to 1490 and Lord Chamberlain of Bohemia from 1490 to 1514. Youth Vilém was one of the most important members of the Moravian and Bohemian noble family of Pernštejn. His parents were Jan II of Pernštejn and his second wife Bohunka of Lomnice. Alois Jirásek () (23 August 1851, Hronov, Kingdom of Bohemia – 12 March 1930, Prague) was a Czech writer, author of historical novels and plays. Jirásek was a high school history teacher in Litomyšl and later in Prague until his retirement in 1909.
