Pottawattamie County () is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. At the 2020 census, the population was 93,667, making it the tenth-most populous county in Iowa. The county takes its name from the Potawatomi Native American tribe. The county seat is Council Bluffs. Pottawattamie County is included in the Omaha–Council Bluffs, NE–IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (0.9%) is water. It is the second-largest county in Iowa by area after Kossuth County. Pottawattamie County is located within Iowa's Loess Hills, and was the site of Kanesville along The Mormon Trail Due to movement of the Missouri River and a Supreme Court ruling, part of the county, Carter Lake, actually lies on the far side of the Missouri River. Council Bluffs, Iowa
Council Bluffs is a city in and the county seat of Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Pottawattamie County, Iowa, United States. The city is the most populous in Southwest Iowa, and is the third largest and a primary city of the Omaha–Council Bluffs metropolitan area, Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area. It is located on the east bank of the Missouri River, across from the city of Omaha, Nebraska. Council Bluffs was known, until at least 1853, as Kanesville. It was the historic starting point of the Mormon Trail. Carter Lake, Iowa
Carter Lake is a city in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, United States. A suburb of Omaha, Nebraska, it sits surrounding the south and west sides of the region's major airport, Eppley Airfield. It is separated from the rest of Iowa by the Missouri River, effectively making it an exclave. The population was 3,791 at the 2020 census. History Carter Lake is an example of the border irregularities of the United States, being the only city in Iowa located west of the Missouri River. In March 1877, a flood redirected the course of the river 1.25 mi (2 km) to the southeast. The remnants of the old river course, called Saratoga Bend, became an oxbow lake, named Carter Lake. Pottawattamie County Courthouse (Iowa)
The Pottawattamie County Courthouse is located in Council Bluffs, Iowa, United States. It is the fourth building the county has used for court functions and county administration. History The first building used for a courthouse was a building owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It was a large two-story log structure on South First Street. The county then rented space for their use until a courthouse was completed in 1868. The property had been acquired two years previous with construction starting the same year. County offices were located on the first floor, court functions on the second, and a jail was located in the basement. That structure became unsafe and was replaced by a stone Beaux-Arts architecture, Beaux Arts-style building in 1888. Voters gave their approval of the project on March 10, 1885. Its route was created in 2019 from a section of I-680 in order to facilitate the movement of I-29 traffic around Council Bluffs in the event of Missouri River flooding.
