Post No Bills (1992 Film)
''Post No Bills'' is a documentary film on satirical political poster artist Robbie Conal directed by Clay Walker. The movie's title comes from lettering found on many construction walls and other city surfaces, indicating that advertisements or handbills are not to be placed on the surface. Plot Cast Production This documentary was shot on 16mm black and white filmstock in Los Angeles, New York City and San Francisco from 1990 to 1992. At the center of the film is a poster that featured LAPD Chief Daryl Gates superimposed on a NRA shooting target with the text "Casual Drug Users Ought To Be Taken Out and Beaten." The controversial posters were glued around the city of Los Angeles in March 1991 shortly after the beating of Rodney King by LAPD officers. Clay Walker (filmmaker)
Clay Walker (born March 15, 1968) is an American filmmaker. Early life and education Walker was born in Memphis on March 15, 1968. He first attended college at Georgia Institute of Technology as an industrial design major and then transferred to Laguardia Community College in Queens to study photography and journalism. From there he transferred to the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in television & film production. Robbie Conal
Robert "Robbie" Conal (born 1944) is an American guerrilla poster artist noted for his gnarled, grotesque depictions of U.S. political figures of note. A former hippie, he is noted for distributing his poster art throughout a city overnight using his "volunteer guerrilla postering army". Overview Conal's parents were both union organizers, and he grew up in Manhattan. Daryl Gates
Daryl Gates (born Darrel Francis Gates; August 30, 1926 – April 16, 2010) was the Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) from 1978 to 1992. His length of tenure in this position was second only to that of William H. Parker. As Chief of the LAPD, he took a more hardline paramilitary approach to law enforcement that disproportionately affected African Americans and Latinos. Gates is co-credited with the creation of SWAT teams with LAPD's John Nelson, who others claim was the originator of SWAT in 1965. Gates also co-founded D.A.R.E. Rodney Glen King (April 2, 1965June 17, 2012) was an African American man who was a victim of police brutality. On March 3, 1991, he was beaten by Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) officers during his arrest after a pursuit for driving while intoxicated on the I-210. An uninvolved individual, George Holliday, filmed the incident from his nearby balcony and sent the footage to local news station KTLA. Oliver Laurence North (born October 7, 1943) is an American political commentator, television host, military historian, author, and retired United States Marine Corps lieutenant colonel. A veteran of the Vietnam War, North was a National Security Council staff member during the Iran–Contra affair, a political scandal of the late 1980s. It involved the illegal sale of weapons to the Khomeini regime of the Islamic Republic of Iran to encourage the release of American hostages then held in Lebanon.
