Post Card (album)
''Post Card'' is the debut album by Mary Hopkin. It was produced by Paul McCartney and released by Apple Records in February 1969 in the UK and in March 1969 in the US. It reached number 3 in the UK and number 28 in the US. It also reached number 24 in Canada. The original US and Canadian versions differed from the UK version by including the hit single " Those Were the Days" instead of a cover of " Someone to Watch Over Me". The 2010 CD reissue includes both "Those Were the Days" and "Someone to Watch Over Me", as well as four bonus tracks including " Turn! Turn! Turn!", which was the B-side of "Those Were the Days", and Hopkin's second single " Goodbye", written by McCartney and credited to Lennon-McCartney, plus four versions in Italian, Spanish, German and French of "Those Were The Days" as a digital download. Mary Hopkin
Mary Hopkin (born 3 May 1950), credited on some recordings as Mary Visconti from her marriage to Tony Visconti, is a Welsh singer-songwriter best known for her 1968 UK number 1 single "Those Were the Days". She was one of the first artists to be signed to The Beatles' Apple label. Biography Early singing career Hopkin was born into a Welsh-speaking family in Pontardawe, Wales; her father worked as a housing officer. She took weekly singing lessons as a child and began her musical career as a folk singer with a local group called the Selby Set and Mary. She released an EP of Welsh-language songs for a local record label called Cambrian, based in her hometown, before signing to Apple Records, owned by the Beatles, one of the first artists to do so. The Puppy Song
"The Puppy Song" is a Harry Nilsson song that appeared on his album ''Harry'' released in August 1969. Nilsson originally wrote this song at Paul McCartney's request for Mary Hopkin, an 18-year-old singer that McCartney had signed to Apple Records and whose first album, ''Post Card'' would feature her version of Nilsson's song. David Cassidy released his version as a double A-side single with " Daydreamer", which reached No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart in 1973. Background In 1968, Nilsson went to London to meet with members of The Beatles after John Lennon named Nilsson as his favorite American artist with both Lennon and Paul McCartney naming him their favorite group, and they requested a session with him. Mikis Theodorakis
Michail "Mikis" Theodorakis ( el, Μιχαήλ "Μίκης" Θεοδωράκης ; 29 July 1925 – 2 September 2021) was a Greek composer and lyricist credited with over 1,000 works. William Sansom
William Norman Trevor Sansom FRSL (18 January 1912 – 20 April 1976) was a British novelist, travel and short story writer known for his highly descriptive prose style. ''Honeymoon'' ( es, link=no, Luna de miel), also shown as ''The Lovers of Teruel'' in the United States, is a 1959 film by the British director-writer Michael Powell based in part on the ballet ''El Amor Brujo'' by Manuel de Falla. The film stars Anthony Steel, Ludmilla Tchérina and Spanish ballet dancer Antonio, and features Léonide Massine. Ray Noble
Raymond Stanley Noble (17 December 1903 – 2 April 1978) was an English jazz and big band musician, who was a bandleader, composer and arranger, as well as a radio host, television and film comedian and actor; he also performed in the United States. Noble wrote both lyrics and music for many popular songs during the British dance band era, known as the "Golden Age of British music", notably for his longtime friend and associate Al Bowlly, including "Love Is the Sweetest Thing", "Cherokee", "The Touch of Your Lips", "I Hadn't Anyone Till You", and his signature tune, "The Very Thought of You". "Love Is the Sweetest Thing" is a popular song written in 1932 by British band leader and singer Ray Noble. Using guest vocalist Al Bowlly, Noble's recording was a big hit on both sides of the Atlantic, bringing Noble his first American success. It was published by Francis, Day & Hunter Ltd. Like most compositions published in the period (commonly called Tin Pan Alley songs), its main refrain (in thirty-two bar A-A-B-A form) is preceded with what were then called " sectional verses" or "introductory verses" which are usually omitted from early recordings and modern performances. ''HMS Donovan'' is the ninth studio album, and tenth album overall, from British singer-songwriter Donovan. It marks the second album of Donovan's children's music, after the ''For Little Ones'' portion of ''A Gift from a Flower to a Garden''. John Mendelsohn (musician)
John Ned Mendelsohn is an American writer, journalist, musician and graphic designer. Biography Mendelsohn, who has sometimes spelled his name as Mendelssohn with two s's, was born in Washington but moved with his parents to southern California aged six months. He lived briefly in the San Fernando Valley, but mostly on the coast, first in Playa del Rey, and later above Pacific Coast Highway just south of Topanga Canyon Boulevard. He studied at the University of California, Los Angeles, thus avoiding military service in the Vietnam War. Mendelsohn began contributing music criticism to the '' Los Angeles Times'' and '' Rolling Stone'' while still a student. Richie Unterberger
Richie Unterberger (born January 19, 1962) is an American author and journalist whose focus is popular music and travel writing. Life and writing Unterberger attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he wrote for the university newspaper ''The Daily Pennsylvanian'' and in the early 1980s was a deejay on the Penn radio station, WXPN-FM.
