Portsmouth Pirates (baseball)
The Portsmouth Red Birds were a minor league baseball club, located in Portsmouth, Ohio. The team played in the Middle Atlantic League between 1936 and 1940. During the club's first two seasons, it was known as the Portsmouth Pirates, as a Class-C affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 1937 the team became affiliated with the St. Louis Cardinals and were then renamed the Portsmouth Red Birds. Middle Atlantic League
The Middle Atlantic League (or Mid-Atlantic League) was a lower-level circuit in American minor league baseball that played during the second quarter of the 20th century. History The Middle Atlantic League played from 1925 through 1951, with the exception of three seasons (1943–45) when the loop suspended operations during World War II. The league primarily featured clubs based in the U.S. states of Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, although it had a team in Maryland and, in its final season, one in New York. Its longest-tenured team, in Johnstown, Pennsylvania - the Johnnies - existed for 19 seasons. Its final champion was the 1951 Niagara Falls Citizens. Walter Emmons Alston (December 1, 1911 – October 1, 1984), nicknamed "Smokey", was an American baseball player and manager in Major League Baseball He is best known for managing the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers from 1954 through 1976, and signed 23 one-year contracts with the He had a calm, reticent demeanor, for which he was sometimes also known as "The Quiet Man." Dutch Dorman
Frederick E. "Dutch" Dorman (June 6, 1902, in Carlstadt, New Jersey – April 5, 1988, in York, Pennsylvania) was a long-time minor league baseball player and manager who later scouted for the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves. Dorman played from 1922 to 1947 and in one game in 1955, hitting around .291 with at least 2,623 hits in 2,541 games. Not a power hitter, he hit zero home runs in a season 19 times and hit a career high of only five. He doubled as many as 32 times in a season. In seasons in which he played at least 75 games, Dorman hit .300 or better nine times. Dorman managed every year from 1936 to 1947 and from 1949 to 1955. He initially managed the York White Roses in 1936, but was replaced. He then took over as manager of the Johnstown Johnnies. The Pittsburgh Pirates are an American professional baseball team based in Pittsburgh. Benny Borgmann
Bernhard Borgmann Jr. (November 22, 1898 – November 11, 1978) was a professional basketball player and coach. Born in Haledon, New Jersey, he played for 17 years between 1919 and 1936, and is mostly known for his time with the Kingston Colonials and Original Celtics. Borgmann is regarded as the best offensive player of his era, leading various leagues in scoring 15 times in a 12-year span. He also served as the first coach of the Syracuse Nationals of the National Basketball League—now the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers—from 1946 to 1948. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1961.
