Portrait Of A Woman Standing (Kassel)
''Portrait of a Woman Standing (Kassel)'' is a painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals, painted in 1618–1620 and now in Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Kassel). It is considered a pendant portrait to the ''Portrait of a Man Standing'', in the same museum. Painting Similar to Hals' ''Portrait of a Woman Standing'' in Chatsworth House, this woman is wearing a wedding ring on her right forefinger, a figure-eight collar and lace wrist collars over sleeves that match her bodice, and a heavy gold chain draped through a vlieger over a wheel-shaped fardegalijn. Her diadem cap lacks wings however and is more similar to the cap worn by Hals's Catholic sitter Catharina Both-van der Eem and by his brewer Aletta Hannemans. Despite the coat-of-arms, this sitter remains unidentified and her portrait was documented by Hofstede de Groot in 1910, who wrote:374. PORTRAIT OF A WOMAN STANDING. B. 100. She looks about thirty years of age. Three-quarter-length. She is turned three-quarters ...

Aletta Hannemans
Aletta Hanemans (1606–1653), was a Dutch brewer. She became the brewer of the ''Hoeffijser'' in Haarlem. She is best known today for her marriage portrait by Frans Hals, painted when she married the brewer, magistrate, and later mayor of Haarlem, Jacob Pietersz Olycan in 1624. Biography Little is known of her early life, but her father was probably a professional acquaintance of her husband's father Pieter Jacobsz Olycan, who had grown up in his father's oil and grain shop in Amsterdam. Though she married Jacob in Zwolle, the young couple was back in Haarlem in 1625, when Hals painted their pendant portraits. Their brewery called the ''Hoeffijser'' or ''Hoef-yzer'' was located on the Donkere Spaarne (near the Teylers Hofje today). Lof der stad Haarlem by Samuel Ampzing It had been given to Jacob by his parents, after he had spent his youth in training there. Portraits By Frans Hals
A portrait is a painting, photograph, sculpture, or other artistic representation of a person, in which the face and its expressions are predominant. The intent is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person. For this reason, in photography a portrait is generally not a snapshot, but a composed image of a person in a still position. A portrait often shows a person looking directly at the painter or photographer, in order to most successfully engage the subject with the viewer. History Prehistorical portraiture Plastered human skulls were reconstructed human skulls that were made in the ancient Levant between 9000 and 6000 BC in the Pre-Pottery Neolithic B period. They represent some of the oldest forms of art in the Middle East and demonstrate that the prehistoric population took great care in burying their ancestors below their homes. The skulls denote some of the earliest sculptural examples of portraiture in the history of art. Historical portraitu ...

Fardegalijn
A farthingale is one of several structures used under Western European women's clothing in the 16th and 17th centuries to support the skirts in the desired shape and enlarge the lower half of the body. It originated in Spain in the fifteenth century. Farthingales served important social and cultural functions for women in Renaissance Europe as they were used, primarily by court women, to show their high social position and wealth. Spanish farthingale The Spanish ''verdugado'', from which "farthingale" derives, was a hoop skirt originally stiffened with esparto grass; later designs in the temperate climate zone were stiffened with osiers ( willow withies), rope, or (from about 1580) whalebone. The name ''verdugado'' comes from the Spanish ''verdugo'' ("green wood", or the more modern meaning of "executioner"). The earliest sources indicate that Joan of Portugal started to use verdugados with hoops in Spain. Joan had provoked much criticism as she allegedly wore dresses tha ...
