Portrait Records
Portrait Records was a sister label of Epic Records and later of Columbia Records. Notable artists Cyndi Lauper and Sade signed with Portrait, but their contracts were absorbed by Epic after that incarnation of the label was shuttered. History & Overview Portrait began in 1976 as a sister label of Epic; its initial signings were Joan Baez, Burton Cummings, and the McCrarys. Cummings' "Stand Tall" was the lead-off single. Baez's '' Blowin' Away'' album and the McCrarys' self-titled debut bowed in early 1977. The label design was similar to that of Columbia's singles; design on it was in grey tones, while the logo was handwritten orange with a red outline. This was also the launch of Epic/Portrait/Associated (EPA) under the CBS moniker. One of the signings the label had was the band Heart. Altered Images are a Scottish new wave/post-punk band who found success in the early 1980s. Fronted by singer Clare Grogan, the group branched into mainstream pop music, having six UK top-40 hit singles and three top-30 albums from 1981 to 1983. Their hits include " Happy Birthday", "I Could Be Happy", "See Those Eyes", and " Don't Talk to Me About Love". New Wave Music
New wave is a loosely defined music genre that encompasses pop-oriented styles from the late 1970s and the 1980s. Honest Lullaby
''Honest Lullaby'' is the nineteenth studio album (and twenty-first overall) by Joan Baez, released in 1979. It would be her final album on CBS Records' Portrait imprint; it also stood as her last studio album issued in the U.S. until the release of her 1987 album, ''Recently''. The autobiographical title song was written for her son, Gabriel Harris, and was performed on ''The Muppet Show'' in 1980. In addition to her own compositions, the album contained work by Janis Ian and Jackson Browne. "Let Your Love Flow" was originally a 1976 hit for The Bellamy Brothers. In her 1987 memoir, ''And a Voice to Sing With'', Baez speculated that she was likely dropped from CBS due to a political disagreement she'd had with the label's then-president. Private Audition
''Private Audition'' is the sixth studio album by American rock band Heart, released on May 20, 1982, by Epic Records. The album reached number 25 on the US ''Billboard'' 200, spending 14 weeks on the chart. It spawned the single " This Man Is Mine", which peaked at number 33 on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100. It is the last Heart album to feature longtime members Mike Derosier and Steve Fossen, who left after the recording of the album and were replaced by Denny Carmassi and Mark Andes. In 2009, ''Private Audition'' was re-released by BGO Records as a double CD with the band's subsequent album, ''Passionworks'' (1983). ''Bébé le Strange'' is the fifth studio album by American rock band Heart, released on February 14, 1980, by Epic Records. It was the first album without founding member Roger Fisher on lead guitar, who had left the band months prior along with his brother Michael. The album was a commercial success, peaking at number five on the US ''Billboard'' 200 and spending 22 weeks on the chart. On May 5, 1980, it was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). ''Bébé le Strange'' spawned the singles " Even It Up" (backed by the Tower of Power horn section) and the title track. ''Little Queen'' is the third studio album by American rock band Heart, released on May 14, 1977, by Portrait Records. The album was recorded and mixed at Kaye-Smith Studios in Seattle, Washington, from February to April 1977. On June 29, 2004, a remastered version of ''Little Queen'' was released by Epic Records and Legacy Recordings with two bonus tracks. Background The group intended ''Magazine'' to be the official follow-up to their debut album ''Dreamboat Annie''. However, a contract dispute with their label, Mushroom Records, resulted in the group signing with the newly formed Portrait Records, a division of CBS Records (now Sony BMG). The Mushroom contract called for two albums, and the label took the position that they were owed a second one.
