It shows a man with a lace collar, which was a new fashion in the 1630s replacing older-styled millstone collars. It is pendant to '' Portrait of a Woman, probably a Member of the Van Beresteyn Family'', and both are in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Description Rembrandt created this painting as a pendant to the MET's portrait of a man, probably as a wedding pendant. Only a few pairs of pendant portraits by Rembrandt have survived. Cornelis Hofstede de Groot (9 November 1863 – 14 April 1930), was a Dutch art collector, art historian and museum curator. Life He was born in Dwingeloo and spent some time in Switzerland in his youth due to weak lungs, where he learned German. He became the first academically schooled art historian of the Netherlands, receiving his training in Leipzig, which is why much of his work was published in German, most notably his lengthy 10-part ''Beschreibendes kritisches Verzeichnis der Werke der hervorragendsten Holländischen Mahler des XVII. Eugène Dutuit (7 April 1807 – 25 June 1886) was a French politician and art collector who also wrote several works on art history. Dutuit was born in Marseille as the son of a cotton merchant, but grew up in Rouen, where he studied law and lived most of his life. He traveled to the Netherlands in 1826 where he visited museums and began collecting prints, six hundred of which he later donated in 1845 to the library of Rouen. He was elected member of the Academy of Sciences, Literature and Arts of Rouen in 1846 and became deputy mayor there from 1846 to 1874. Alfred Wurzbach Ritter von Tannenberg (born 22 July 1846 in Lemberg; died 18 May 1915 in Vienna) was an Austrian art critic. Biography He was the son of Constantin von Wurzbach. Maurick Castle is a castle in Vught, Netherlands. It had many famous owners and visitors. Building The current castle has a rather illogical form. The core is formed by a seemingly very large main building 'glued' to a gate building of the same height. The core makes a very defendable impression, but together with some other buildings, it is on an island way too large to makes sense from a defensive point of view. This suggests that the castle is on the outer bailey of a preceding castle. The gate building probably dates from the early fifteenth century. The main building with the overhanging towers, just west of the gate, seems a single 4 windows wide structure, but this is not the case. Walter Arthur Liedtke, Jr. (August 28, 1945 – February 3, 2015) was an American art historian, writer and Curator of Dutch and Flemish Paintings at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He was known as one of the world's leading scholars of Dutch and Flemish paintings. He died in the 2015 Metro-North Valhalla train crash. Early life Liedtke was born in Plainfield, New Jersey, and grew up in Livingston, New Jersey. Rembrandt Research Project
The Rembrandt Research Project (RRP) was an initiative of the Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO), which is the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. Its purpose was to organize and categorize research on Rembrandt van Rijn, with the aim of discovering new facts about this Dutch Golden Age painter and his studio. The project started in 1968 and was sponsored by NWO until 1998. Research continued until 2014. It was the authority on Rembrandt and had the final say in whether a painting is ''genuine''. The documentation generated by the project was transferred to the Netherlands Institute for Art History and renamed the Rembrandt Database.
