Porteous Family
The Porteous family is a Scottish Borders armigerous family. History The earliest records for members of the Porteous family in Peeblesshire date back to the early part of the fifteenth century. The earliest possible reference, according to Lord Lyon King of Arms in Edinburgh, is to a Guillaume Porteuse (later William Porteous), who arrived from Normandy c 1400 under the patronage of the wealthy Fraise family (later to become the Frasers). They had already settled in parts of lowland Scotland, having been granted lands by the King. The early meaning of the name Porteuse (from the French) was indeed possibly of 'courier' or 'messenger'. But in Scotland, they turned their hand to other trades. Johnny Porteous
John Robertson Porteous (5 December 1921 – 13 August 2007) was a Scottish footballer who played as a wing half. He began his career as a footballer with Motherwell F.C., but did not make a league appearance before joining Alloa Athletic in 1948. A year later, he moved to England to play for Plymouth Argyle, under the management of fellow countryman Jimmy Rae. A versatile player, Porteous was instrumental in the team that won the Third Division South championship in the 1951–52 season, and remained a regular name in the side until 1955. Thomas Stoddart Porteous (October 1865 – 23 February 1919) was an English footballer who played as a right back, for Sunderland and also one appearance for England. Career Club Although born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Porteous grew up in Dalkeith and Kilmarnock in Scotland, and started his football career north of the border with Hearts before joining Kilmarnock in 1884. In 1889 Porteous arrived at Sunderland after gaining a high reputation in Scotland, and joining what was to become known as the Team of All the Talents, filled almost entirely with players recruited from Scotland. He made his debut on 18 January 1890 in a FA Cup match against Blackburn Rovers, but had to wait until 13 September before making his League debut. Gabriel Thomas Porteous Jr. (December 15, 1946 – November 14, 2021) was a United States federal judge, United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. Stanley David Porteus (April 24, 1883 – October 21, 1972) was an Australian psychologist and author. Early life Porteus was born at Box Hill, Victoria, Australia, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria. His father was a Methodist minister, and the family moved frequently. He attended the Melbourne Education Institute on a three year scholarship and completed his studies in 1899. He began teaching, and in 1909 he married Frances Mainwaring Evans. They eventually had two sons together. Colonel Patrick Anthony Porteous VC (1 January 1918 – 9 October 2000) was a Scottish recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Second World War Porteous was commissioned in the Royal Regiment of Artillery in 1937. On 26 August 1940 he was promoted to lieutenant.
