Porteous's Tuco-tuco
The Mendoza tuco-tuco (''Ctenomys mendocinus'') is a species of rodent in the family Ctenomyidae. Taxonomy A 2021 phylogenetic study found that Azara's tuco-tuco (''C. azarae'') and Porteous's tuco-tuco (''C. porteousi''), which were both previously considered distinct species in '' Ctenomys'', are synonymous with ''C. mendocinus''. The American Society of Mammalogists has followed this study's results. The former species was named after Spanish naturalist Félix de Azara, while the latter species was named after Lieutenant Colonel John James Porteous (1857–1948) and his nephew Don Cecil John Montague Porteous (1884– 1953), who owned land in Argentina. Description ''Ctenomys mendocinus'' ranges from 230 to 280 mm in body length, and tail length of 70–91 mm. Body mass ranges anywhere between 100 and 250 g, with males typically larger than females. Rodolfo Amando (or Rudolph Amandus) Philippi (14 September 1808 – 23 July 1904) was a German–Chilean paleontologist and zoologist. Philippi contributed primarily to malacology and paleontology. Michael Rogers Oldfield Thomas (21 February 1858 – 16 June 1929) was a British zoologist. Career Thomas worked at the Natural History Museum on mammals, describing about 2,000 new species and subspecies for the first time. He was appointed to the museum secretary's office in 1876, transferring to the zoological department in 1878. In 1891, Thomas married Mary Kane, daughter of Sir Andrew Clark, heiress to a small fortune, which gave him the finances to hire mammal collectors and present their specimens to the museum. Félix Manuel de Azara y Perera (18 May 1746 – 20 October 1821) was a Spanish military officer, naturalist, and engineer. Life Félix de Azara was born on 18 May 1746 in Barbunales, Aragon. He joined the army and attended a Spanish military academy. He was commissioned as an engineer, distinguishing himself on various expeditions. He spent the next thirteen years of his life in the military and rose to the rank of brigadier general in the Spanish Army. In 1777, Spain and Portugal signed the Treaty of San Ildefonso. As dictated by the treaty, each nation would send a delegation to the Río de la Plata region to negotiate the border dispute between the Portuguese and Spanish colonies. Azara was selected as a member of this delegation, departing quickly for the New World.
