Portaferry GAC
Portaferry GAC ( ga, Port An Pheire) is a GAA Club in the East of Down in the Ards Peninsula. It is one of three Senior Hurling Clubs in Down, the other two being Ballygalget GAA and Ballycran GAA. History The depth of the hurling tradition in the Ards can be gauged from the fact that the game was first played on the Peninsula as early as 1900 by Portaferry Carraig Uladh. But it was Ned Purcell, an agricultural inspector from Tipperary, who laid the real foundations between 1912 and 1917. His influence not only left Portaferry with the Tipp colours, but also Tipperary skills and love of the game. Locals such as John Emerson, John McCullough, John and Eddie Dumigan and Fr Toal carried on where Ned left off and such was the interest that 4 teams from Portaferry competed in the Ards Gaelic Association during the early Twenties. Robert Magee
Robert Armstrong Magee (May 21, 1864 – January 12, 1957) was a businessman and political figure in Saskatchewan. He represented Moose Mountain in the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan from 1912 to 1921 as a Liberal. He was born in Ottawa County, Canada East, the son of Francis Magee, and came to Wolseley, Saskatchewan in 1883 by train. Magee served as a scout during the North-West Rebellion of 1885. In 1891, he married Eleanor "Daisy" Campbell; the couple were married by Reverend A. Campbell, Eleanor's father. He was the first mayor of Wolseley, also serving several other terms as mayor. With his brother Richard and A.G. Thompson, he established the Magee and Thompson Company. Magee also was a local justice of the peace, a sheriff and was registrar for the Moosomin judicial district from 1921 to 1939. Magee and his wife later retired to Kelowna, British Columbia. Kevin McGarry
John Kevin McGarry ( – August 1995) was a Northern Ireland international footballer who played with Cliftonville from 1949. He played Gaelic football before being convinced to sign amateur forms with Belfast Celtic. He played a few first-team games for Celtic before signing with Cliftonville. At Solitude he was also a prolific goalscorer. He was named as the inaugural Ulster Footballer of the Year for the 1950–51 season. As a student at Queen's University, he was selected by Ireland for an amateur international against England in February 1948: a 5–0 defeat. He was then chosen for an Irish F.A. representative side which beat the United States 5–0, with McGarry scoring twice. In 1952, he was part of the Great Britain squad at the Helsinki Olympics, but he did not play in any matches.
