Port Conway, Virginia
Port Conway is an unincorporated community on the north side of the Rappahannock River in King George County, in the Northern Neck of Virginia. It is opposite Port Royal, which is on the south side of the river in Caroline County. James Madison, the fourth President of the United States, was born in Port Conway on March 16, 1751, at Belle Grove plantation. The plantation was the childhood home of his mother, Eleanor Rose "Nellie" Conway, the daughter of its owner, Francis Conway, for whom Port Conway was named. On April 26, 1865, after assassinating President Abraham Lincoln, John Wilkes Booth and his traveling companion David Herold, with Union cavalry in pursuit, crossed the Rappahannock River at Port Conway. The cavalry caught up with them at Garrett's Farm, south of Port Royal, where Herold surrendered and Booth was killed. James Madison
James Madison Jr. (March 16, 1751June 28, 1836) was an American statesman, diplomat, and Founding Father. He served as the fourth president of the United States from 1809 to 1817. The Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace AVA is an American Viticultural Area in eastern portion of the state of Virginia. Wines made from grapes grown in Westmoreland, King George, Northumberland, Lancaster, and Richmond counties may use this appellation. The area is located on a peninsula of land between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers in the Tidewater region of Virginia and known as the Northern Neck. Woodlawn Historic And Archeological District
The Woodlawn Historic and Archeological District encompasses a historic plantation near the Rappahannock River in southern King George County, Virginia. The property is located east of US Route 301 near Port Conway. The estate boundaries are essentially the same as those when the plantation was first established in 1790. The main plantation house dates to that time although it has been extended and altered over the intervening centuries. Also of notable interest on this property are surviving antebellum slave quarters, and archaeological sites containing evidence of Native American occupation of the land. David Herold
David Edgar Herold (June 16, 1842 – July 7, 1865) was an American pharmacist's assistant and accomplice of John Wilkes Booth in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln on April 14, 1865. After the shooting, Herold accompanied Booth to the home of Dr. Samuel Mudd, who set Booth's injured leg. The two men then continued their escape through Maryland and into Virginia, and Herold remained with Booth until the authorities cornered them in a barn. Herold surrendered, but Booth was shot and died two hours later. Herold was sentenced to death and hanged with three other conspirators at the Washington Arsenal, now known as Fort Lesley J. McNair.
