Porsgrunn
is a city and municipality in Telemark in the county of Vestfold og Telemark in Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Grenland. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Porsgrunn. The municipality of Porsgrunn was established on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). The town of Brevik and the rural district of Eidanger were merged into the municipality of Porsgrunn on 1 January 1964. The conurbation of Porsgrunn and Skien is considered by Statistics Norway to be the seventh-largest city in Norway. Porsgrunn City Hall
Porsgrunn City Hall is the seat of government for Porsgrunn city and municipality in Telemark, Norway. The current city hall was constructed in 1905 after the original building was destroyed in a fire. The building is situated at the intersection of Storgata and Rådhusgata in eastern Porsgrunn. History Original building The first city hall in Porsgrunn was originally part of a farm called the Chamberlain Estate ( no, Kammerherregården). The farmhouse was built for Niels Aall between 1763 and 1765 by the master builder Joen Jacobsen, who was famous for building Grenland churches such as Østre Porsgrunn Church. Jacobsen built the farmhouse using the pattern of Herregården, a count's manor house in Larvik, after which he had also modeled the house at Borgestad Farm in Skien a few years earlier. Telemark
Telemark is a traditional region, a former county, and a current electoral district in southern Norway. In 2020, Telemark merged with the former county of Vestfold to form the county of Vestfold og Telemark. Telemark borders the traditional regions and former counties of Vestfold, Buskerud, Hordaland, Rogaland and Aust-Agder. Grenland
Grenland is a traditional district in the county of Vestfold og Telemark, in the south-east of Norway. Located in the southeastern part of the county, Grenland is composed of the municipalities Skien, Porsgrunn, Bamble, and Siljan. Sometimes the municipalities Kragerø and Drangedal of the smaller Vestmar region are also considered to be part of the area. The region encompasses 1,794 km2 and has 122,978 inhabitants (2004), which translates as 12% of the area and 64% of the population of Telemark. Grenland is the core of a slightly larger traditional district known as Nedre Telemark ("Lower Telemark") which also includes Bø, Sauherad and Heddal. Robin Kåss
Robin Martin Kåss (born 10 January 1977 in Dublin, Ireland) is a Norwegian politician for the Norwegian Labour Party, Labour Party. He has lived most of his life in Porsgrunn, Telemark, Norway. He joined the Workers' Youth League (Norway), Workers' Youth League at a young age, and was also active in JEF Norway. He was elected to Porsgrunn municipal council (Norway), city council in 1995. After completing national service in the Royal Norwegian Navy, he moved to Liverpool, England to study medicine, graduating in 2003 with honours. He started as a family doctor in Skien, and later also became the medical director of the GP-led casualty unit. He was elected for a second term in Porsgrunn city council in 2007 after becoming leader of Porsgrunn Labour party the same year. Eidanger
Eidanger is a rural parish and former municipality of Porsgrunn, in Telemark County, Norway. History Eidanger was established as a municipality on 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt). It was merged with Porsgrunn on 1 January 1964. The main part of Eidanger is a peninsula between the Eidangerfjord and the Frierfjord. Situated between the urban communities of Brevik and Porsgrunn, and with excellent natural conditions for building harbours, it became the site of Norsk Hydro's plant at Herøya and the Dalen Portland (now part of the Norcem corporation) concrete factory just outside Brevik. Another major industry is Heistad Fabrikker, which makes products for diabetics. Isola maintains its head office and administration office in Eidanger. Vestfold Og Telemark
Vestfold og Telemark (; ) is a county under disestablishment in Norway. The county is the southernmost one of Eastern Norway and consists of two distinct and separate traditional regions: the former counties of Telemark and (most of) Vestfold. The capital is located at the town of Skien, which is also the county's largest city. While Skien is the seat of the county municipality, the seat of the County Governor is Tønsberg. It borders the counties of Viken, Vestland, Rogaland and Agder. Telemark voted against the merger, on the basis that the regions have nothing in common and do not constitute a natural geographical, cultural, social or political entity. Skien () is a city and municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county in Norway. In modern times it is regarded as part of the traditional region of Grenland, although historically it belonged to Grenmar/Skiensfjorden, while Grenland referred the Norsjø area and Bø. Gimsøy Abbey
Gimsøy Abbey (''Gimsøy kloster'') was a Benedictine monastery located on the eastern end of the island of Klosterøya at Skien in Telemark, Norway. The island was commonly referred to as ''Gimsøy'' or ''Gjemsø''. History The abbey was founded in the first half of the 12th century by Dag Eilivsson and his wife Ragnhild Skoftesdotter at their estate Gimsøy. It was founded after Eilivsson had returned unharmed to Norway after having participated in the Norwegian Crusade to Jerusalem of Sigurd the Crusader in circa 1110. Their daughter Baugeid Dagsdatter (d. after 1161) later became an abbess there. His son and successor Gregorius Dagsson (d. 1161) is commonly reported to have been buried there. Brevik, Norway
Brevik () is a town in Telemark, Norway, with an estimated population of 2,700. Brevik was established as a municipality 1 January 1838 (see formannskapsdistrikt), but was merged with Porsgrunn on 1 January 1964. Brevik is regarded as one of the best preserved towns from the sailing ship era. The town is located on the far end of Eidanger peninsula ( Eidangerhalvøya), and was a former export centre for ice and timber. The last shipment of wood to the United Kingdom was around 1960.
